But, I took out my flugel mouthpiece Yamaha 14F4, fits better than the standard cornet mouthpiece. Since it is a V cup in mellows out the tone - actually sounds real good! Has anyone tried doing this? Should I still be looking for a larger shank cornet mouthpiece?

Please pardon my ignorance, I've done my best to search the site - if anyone can give me a link to an appropriate thread on this subject it would be greatly appreciated!
I have tried two different "low-cost" approaches. First, I take a regular mouthpiece and wrap a strip of aluminum foil around the shank to build it up to the point where it does not fall into the receiver. I also have used a trumpet mouthpiece (sort of like you are doing with your Flugel) because I have one that has a smaller taper. It does not go all the way in so I have to be careful that it doesn't fall out but it does work ok for playing.

Re: Ok, so my Olds Super Cornet came today...

I first used a Yamaha standard cornet mouthpiece, which went in pretty far, but it fit. It was in tune at the bottom of the staff, but had trouble with tuning at the top of the staff...so I figured out quickly that it didn't work.

The website A.N.A. Mendez recommended had different options to try, and it actually recommended using the Yamaha flugel mouthpieces (which luckily is what I use) and adjusting the tuning slide. It works ok, very deep flugel-like tone if thats what you're after.

So, I went to mouthpieceexpress.com and dropped the bucks for a special order Curry 5DC mouthpiece with the Olds shank. I almost went for the Vintage Series, but after some research the DC seemed to be a better fit for me....hope it works out!
