Ok, so my Olds Super Cornet came today...

...and its everything you all said it would be! Beautiful centered tone, plays easily - nice response! I'm sure I paid way too much for it, but overall I'm very happy!

Thanks for all the advice...I had a thread a while ago asking about a Getzen Super Deluxe, and you all steered me to the Olds Super. (took me awhile to get here because I HAD to buy a flugel in between )

The problem now is I promised my wife I would sell my Ambassador Cornet...I don't think I can! They play and sound too different...I guess I have to find a hiding spot!

Congrats! You are an inspiration for perseverance. You can hide the Ambassador in my house.

That's right! Nice to hear from you on the forum. What goes around , comes around. Glad you like the Super and my Ambassador was satisfactory.
Tomorrow , I am going to sell my American Standard and Getzen to a local guy, cheap, as he advertised for a cheap cornet for his grand kids to learn on. I said, why not take both? I don't play them much anymore.

Careful what you promise to your wife.

Re: Ok, so my Olds Super Cornet came today...

The Ambassdor is more than satisfactory, I really like it...its what got me hooked on Olds. I wanted a good looking vintage horn that played well - so after reading everthing posted on this site, and my experience with the Ambassador - I got the Super!

I was amazed at how well crafted the Ambassador you sold me was, and the big sound - real nice for jazz and blues.

I beleive you didn't like something about the tuning? I don't rembember, but I've only used it with my teacher - and we didn't have any tuning issues. Maybe if I play it in a gig setting I may run into problems...but overall I'm rally happy with it...Thanks!!

The Super is beautiful, and plays completely different. Its tighter and the tone is sweeter and more centered. I really like them both, so I don't plan on unloading the Ambassador just yet...

As you can see, I will only have left my King Master Model and Besson cornets, both of which are fine players.

Sounds like another Olds fan looking for hiding places in-house.
One trick I have used (of course this only works in volume) is to put notes on cases in the garage that read "empty"

Re: Ok, so my Olds Super Cornet came today...

Most under rated models are the special and studio.
Most unheralded all around trumpet Olds made was the Mendez model. Some have said it is a dressed up Ambassador, that is a load of crap. The only thing it might share (along with every other Olds ) is the mandrel they used to make the bell. It has many other unique features, gold plated finger buttons, the ferules, water keys, braces, the balusters are the ONLY ones aside from the very early recordings to be straight up and down, no bulge. The valves are the first to have single pin guides, the 1st and 3rd throw, dump slide, unique receiver, hand engraving, beautiful deluxe case, and available as/in a long cornet (which is another interesting story) and they can do ANY style music from classical to jazz. Of course I am not biased in any way.

This is a 55 cornet and a 52 trumpet, notice front brace on cornet......
