Old Case Smell (or stench!)

ok, so i've been able to do a pretty good job at cleaning up some nasty, but great old horns (1920's). But there's one thing I still can't figure out...

That OLD CASE SMELL!!! It's proving to be quite a beast, and I haven't found a very long term solution, anyone have any hints or secrets I'm missing?

Thanks as always

Re: Old Case Smell (or stench!)

Hi,

I have used a product called Microban that takes much of the stench away. For the really hard core stinkers, a trip to a fire restoration company that will steam and ozone the case will reduce most of the offensive odor.

Cheers,

Brian

Re: Old Case Smell (or stench!)

I've found a good old fashioned sunning and airing out helps. Many mold spores are UV sensitive, and exposure to direct sunlight kills them. I air, vacuum, then use unscented carpet freshener with baking soda. I let it sit with the carpet freshener (put the horn in the case with it, as lacquer will hold the smell) then repeat the entire process as needed. Usually by the third treatment it is bearable.

Have you tried that Fabreze product? It's for fabric sofas, car seats, etc..

I agree on the old-fashioned sun and airing it out. Get those molds out of there.

Re: Old Case Smell (or stench!)

Nice thread lads.

I have exactly this problem with an Eb Tenor Horn case. I've tried cleaning, sunning, vacuuming, leaving cotton balls soaked in vanilla essence - none have worked, although the old horn smells OK now. I even tried leaving the whole shootin' match in my shed with the case open to see if some of that magical shed smell might go the other way - even shed smell didn't do any good. I think I might leave it in the bathroom and see if my wife can fix it - she goes after all the nasty smells in there with gusto (measure of energy - not a cleaning product). Oooooh, now there's a thought - perhaps just igniting a match near the case will work - that has been successful elsewhere.

Fresh Charcoal Briquets closed in a case with a musty smell will reduce much of the smell over a short period of time.

bing,

You'd be surprised if you accidently left a luncheon meat sandwich in your old horn case for two weeks which will then make the "old stench" of the case smell wonderful! Just teasing! The folks here have already given you several ideas how to curtail the old case smell. Let is know what finally works.

Best wishes,

Lloyd

Re: Old Case Smell (or stench!)

Sigh,

Mold spores, if not killed will simply 'restench' your case. The folk remedies are just that and will not work on heavily infested cases. Try all the suggestions. Your case will still stink. Buy the proper product. Geez, these folks and their homegrown remedies would crap all over you if you posted how you were using 3 in 1 oil on your valves because it was cheap and you had some lying around. I repeat, buy a sporicidal. Seek professional advice from a restoration company rather than relying on this endlessly repeated stuff that has no validity in science.

Cheers,

Brian

Re: Old Case Smell (or stench!)

Brian is right the spores will grow and the stench will come back if you don't kill them. I have had great success with ozone. We have an ozone generator for our housew. Put the case along with the ozonator in a big garbage bag for a day. Gets rid of the odor and it does not come back. OK, now you are asking where do I get an ozonator. I travel a lot and most decsent hotels have them and if you stay regularly they will usually let you use them. If not you could complain of cigarette odor and they will usually put one in the room. be warned DO NOT LEAVE THE HORN IN THE CASE WHEN DOING THIS.

Here are couple a links for Ozonators:
This one is Ok :
OdorFree Ozone Generator and Commercial air Purifier - Professional Grade Cleaners That Eliminate Odors Naturally

This is the ones I use :
Better Living Alpine Fresh Air Purifiers - New Infrared Heater, Edenpure Heater, Heaters, PTC Heater
