Old Couesnon Lafayette Trumpet

Has anyone here ever played one of these? Any idea what they are worth? I have a lead one that's a fair distance away, but I don't want spend the time and gas $$$ if it's just an interesting old horn. Based on the pictures I've seen it has quite a bit of lacquer loss but it's fully functional. How do these things play?

I'd appreciate any inputs...

Thanks.
Chris

In addition to what Lou has said, you can check on ebay advanced search for completed listings and search for completed sales to get info on values. They turn up there every so often. Maybe that is where you are looking at one? You can also go to Horn-u-copia site and scroll to the Couesnon thread under Manufacturers, and on page 2 there are some pictures of Layfayette trumpets. On page one there is a very interesting treatise on Cousenon history to the present day.

Re: Old Couesnon Lafayette Trumpet

Brief update. Apparently the horn in question is not a Lafayette, based on what I've seen on Ebay, rather, an Alcazar, with the interesting 3rd slide location, as seen at the Horn-u-copia site:

Horn-u-copia public forum discussing antique, obscure and out-of-production Brass Instruments

Does the student level rating still apply? Thanks.

I don't know. Even more obscure instrument, I guess, with only the one photo and no detail there. Looks like a common design of many trumpets in early 3rd of 20th century. I wouldn't want to be definitive on the quality, but it well may be a student horn, as it is not listed in the 1913 model list on Horn-u-copia. Monopole was their usual name for top line horns. It looks similar to a Beaufort American horn I briefly had, made in Czechloslovakia for Sears, Roebuck. Maybe someone else will chime in.

Dave has nailed that one. It is a low intermediate level horn that got little acceptance worldwide. There were many less costly horns of better quality and performance available at the same time it was offered.

Re: Old Couesnon Lafayette Trumpet

Thanks for the info, gents! I scoured the web for any/all information and basically came up the a couple of pictures and little else. Based on your collective knowledge I will stay away from this one. I only asked as a last resort, sometimes there could be an obscure diamond in the rough...

Good idea! Many of us are always looking for that " Diamond in the Rough". That hope keeps you going! Personally, I would settle for a "Zircon in the Rough" if it played well. A couple of my hoped for treasures turned out to be lumps of coal, as the chance you take for gambling on anything.
