Old Holton Trumpet

Hey,

I have an old holton trumpet (given to me by my grandfather). It is in absolutely horrible condition (mainly the bell is horribly dented), but it plays beautifully. I am just curious to know if this trumpet is anything special and if it would be worth anything (if it was in good condition).

Bell engraving: Holton 51-LB Elkhorn, Wis. U.S.A.
Serial Number: 351789

Thanks.

There are some good repair techs on here that may be able to advise you. If you could post some photos that would help to assess the likelihood of success. (Use Photobucket or other hosting service to upload the photos and then copy the "img" link into your post.)

I took my Holton to a shop and they removed the crease in the bell for a very nominal fee but then maybe mine was not as bad. Also, if the rim wire is bent, that probably makes it harder to repair - mine was not bent.

Sure, here's some pics. If it's worth a decent amount I'll consider getting it fixed.

Re: Old Holton Trumpet

Here is some information from the Holtonloyalist.com website. Based on the serial number it appears to be a 1962 model.

Quote:
Model: 51 Series: Revelation

Developed by Holton for professionals who demand the ultimate in large bore power, brilliance and response, this trumpet has met with enthusiastic praise wherever it has appeared. With all of its power house capacity, it retains the fine tonal coloring, exceptional flexibility, fine intonation, and easy blowing qualities that characterize Holton trumpets. Large Bore (0.465).
Based on this information, I would say that it is very much worth repairing. It appears to be in great shape other than the unfortunate damage to the bell. But, a good repair tech can make it much better. There may be some that can even make it perfect but to find that one special person may take some searching. For the deep creasing that yours has, it will take something beyond the usual roller approach, I am guessing. But, start looking around for someone and meanwhile, perhaps some of the experts here will have more to say.
Good luck.

Re: Old Holton Trumpet

Holton Loyalist.com - Dedicated to the Frank Holton & Co.; Makers of High Grade Band Instruments Check out this site. The 51 Revelation model was a professional horn. There is a picture and some description in the Trumpets and cornets section. If you check out the Holton section in Horn-u-copia there is a discussion about the post war models and the 51 was said to be one of the rarer ones.

There were threads here about them, but I can't find them.

Re: Old Holton Trumpet

Does anyone have an idea of how much this trumpet would be worth if it was in good condition?

Re: Old Holton Trumpet

My guess is that it would be worth $300.00 -$350.00 if it was in excellent condition. Although they are not highly valued, these old Holtons are great horns. If you like it, fix it up and play it; it will never be worth much in resale.

I'm a full-time player and my main axe is a 1929 model #48.

Welcome to TM, UgoSolari - Since you are a full-time player, you likely have a lot to offer to us returning players who are trying to re-discover the secret of chops (and fingering, and trills and all of the other stuff we forgot long ago). In fact, why not go to the 'Introductions and Greetings' section and post a little bio. We all like to know our fellow trumpeters better. Visit often and throw your hat into the ring from time to time.
