    Old J W York & Sons Cornet

I recently came across my old cornet from junior high school. I am trying to find out some more info on it if someone could help.
It has Professional(in a scroll) then next below it it has made by JW York & Sons Grand Rapids Mich. Valves are # 1,2,3. On middle valve above the 2 is 7666. Not sure if this is serial #. any help would be great.

I imagine you will hear from our York guru , OLDLOU pretty soon. He has a large collection. If that is the serial, it would date it to 1903-4. You might go to Horn-u-copia then to the York link under the Manufacturers, and explore the data, comments and photo gallery for info on yours. OLDLOU is the moderator. There is an old York Professional, ID3011 in the Manufacturer's Gallery cornet section.

We would be interested in seeing some pics. You have to add them from host like Flickr or Photobucket, etc.

The York Professional was one of J.W.Yorks best efforts. It was a close kin to the Boston 3Star cornet, which was also made by old uncle York when he worked in Boston alongside A.J.'Bill' Johnson who ran Yorks plant for many years and ended up buying York out of the business. The York Professional was about as good as any cornet on the market at the time of its manufacture. If yours is not leaky it should still play as well as most top shelf cornets on todays market. You have a nice one if it isn't damaged. I have one now and have had either three or four of them over the years.

Thank you oldlou, It has a few dents but valves all still work fine. I just came across it after 35 years. I have taken some pictures of it how do I post them on here. Interested in possible value and such. My son is a musian. He plays sax and 5 string Bass. Just wondering if I should hold on to it and such.

Hey, lavaman8, We all vote that you hold onto it - and start to play it again. There is a very large contingent of returning players here, some coming back after 30, 40, even 50+ years off. So, it can be done and it's a lot of fun. We all enjoy swapping lies with each other on this forum. Join in.

As I mentioned before, the uploader doesn't work on this site. You have to set up a free account on Flickr, Photobucket, or some hosting site, then transfer them on a post here. Values are variable for old cornets like that, a lot depends on condition, rarity, so forth. But listing on ebay would give you the answer.
