Old Martin Odd trumpet/cornet?

Hi everyone -

I'm new here, but I'm trying to find information about an odd trumpet I picked up recently.

It is a Martin, and appears to be 1920's or teens in vintage. The model simply says "The Martin" and all the typical floral engraving and Elkhart, IN markings.

What I am trying to figure out is if this is a cornet or a trumpet, technically. I know that sounds silly, especially since I have been a trumpet player (not collector) for 18 years now, but I have never seen one like this. It looks like a trumpet, but the leadpipe seems to be a cornet leadpipe, and it takes cornet mouthpieces. The bell and overall shape of the horn, however, appears to be a trumpet.

Anyone see anything like this?

Thanks!

You might want to check out the following website: Horn-u-copia Some nice folks who really, really love old horns are to be found there. Uhh, I mean some of those same folks are here at TM too, but you might want to check this site out in the meantime.

Conn was famous for making "long cornets" in the arly 1900's.
They looked exactly like trumpets but used cornet mouthpieces.

See

The Conn Loyalist

and

Each time that article mentions a model of long cornet, click on the blue name to be taken to a picture and description of the long cornet, such as

A similar one made by Martin, "Vintage Martin Long Model Cornet", is for sale for $200 at
Used Horns (Trumpets - Cornets - Flugelhorns)

Large photo of that same long cornet is at

Hope that helps.

Re: Old Martin Odd trumpet/cornet?

What is the differance between a long cornet and a trumpet? What makes a cornet a cornet? thanks

Re: Old Martin Odd trumpet/cornet?

I have a vintage Gretsch Pathfinder, advert as trumpet, but actually a long cornet. The lead pipe is shorter and smaller diameter, for a short shank old cornet mouthpiece to tune properly. I use a standard cornet with a wrapping of electrical tape to achieve the same thing. I've read that to get a more true cornet sound, you need to use a deep v cup mouthpiece. Seems to me to be a complicated business of evaluation and selection to get the right one, and having access to a facility to be able to try different one out.

Re: Old Martin Odd trumpet/cornet?

As one of the Horn-U-Copia regulars mentioned above I do have answers to most of your questions.

A cornet is defined as a soprano brass wind instrument using a cupped mouthpiece and having more conical tubing than cylindrical in it overall length. A trumpet is a reverse of the above.

Many instrument makers in the early part of the last century,( 1900-1999 ) made cornets to look as much like trumpets as possible and to sound as much like a trumpet as could be done. This was brought about by the popularity of jazz and 'big band' swing music and the blaring trumpet work that was associated with such music. The old British short cornet design fell into disuse by the general public, along with the "shepherds crook" bell tube design. Because of a resurgance of British Brass Band music and the attendant competition between such bands, the old short, shepherds crook almost totally conical cornet is becoming once again popular. My personal hope is that this trend continues. I dearly love my grandfathers old York short cornet and used it in a band concert in the park just last Thursday. I also am enthralled by my old King Liberty trumpet, which has the sweetest ringing tone that I can imagine. The two horns are at opposite ends of the sound spectrum but, both sing!!!
