Olds Fans: There is an Olds Super for Sale!

Olds Super

Needs finishing and looks like the valves need some work? Worth it?

Re: Olds Fans: There is an Olds Super for Sale!

I was just at my best friend's house, looking at the old trumpets his dad has. The first was nothing special-an old Elkhart that was cool to see but not valuable. The second case said "Olds" and contained his dad's horn from high school. I opened it expecting an Ambassador, and was instead greeted by an Olds Super, circa 1962, with not so much as a flea-bite ding and the original lacquer (though pretty tarnished). I almost cried, because I know it hasn't been played in forty years...

If I wasn't currently searching for a different trumpet, I probably would have! It was a very open, free blowing trumpet to play. I'm not sure whether I liked it or not, since I didn't have my usual mouthpiece along to try it with.

Hell Brian, I got one for sale on eBay that'll likely go for less than half of that horn and doesn't need valve work. Looks better too.

Looks like I'm not the only one who plays an Olds Super with a Schilke 14A4a mouthpiece!

Re: Olds Fans: There is an Olds Super for Sale!

Welcome Col.Locke to TM,
I fully agree with MFfan if you plan to play with other trumpeters, eg brass band, big band, concert band etc. Bach Strad should be first. If you will be playing as a solo trumpet in a small group then the Olds would work.

If I was in you position, I would look for a good Bach Strat 180-37 as it will do you for all your group work, and get an Olds to play around on. BTW I love Olds, and would go for an Olds Super Cornet as the second horn. Just for the flexibility and difference as a comparison to the Bach. The Bach 37 is probably the standard in quality and sound for off the shelf horns.
Good playing, and keep swingin', Most of all Enjoy it; and be patient.
Cheers

Hey I just noticed this mistake (above), it was for another thread...sorry guys. Funny how it has appeared twice, it must have been my error some-how.

Hey, Peter: Question for you:

With all those different horns you have, how many of them actually get played in your typical one week period?

I've always been curious about what horn collectors do with their horns.
