Re: which Olds are higher quality?

I can't comment on the Mendez. My only encounter with one was many years ago when I tried one in a music shop at the same time I tried a Recording. I preferred the way the Recording played, and just haven't gotten any real itch to have a Mendez since then. But to me the holy trinity (not capitalized, so as not to offend either the religious or the good cooks in Louisiana, each of which have a different definition for that term) of Oldsdom would have to be Super Recording, Super, and Recording, in no particular order.

Re: which Olds are higher quality?

I'm old enough to remember the Olds line from the 60s. If this helps, in their catalouge from that time they listed the Mendez as their top horn. After that it was the recording, Opera, Super, etc.

Re: which Olds are higher quality?

I'm old enough to remember the Olds line from the 1950's, unfortunately. Maybe we can get ANA Mendez or someone else who owns them all to jump in with some opinion here. I know the Mendez was always priced and promoted as the top of the line, but wonder just how it stacked up against competition. For example, I have a real Besson Meha as well as a Kanstul recreation of the same. Considering that the Mendez model was supposedly imitative of that design, how would an Olds Mendez compare to a French Besson Meha?

Was the Mendez vastly different from the rest of the Olds line, was it closer to other Olds than to Besson? I don't have the answers, and don't anticipate adding a Mendez to my collection to find out. I'm not trying to belittle the Mendez model at all, just wondering where it really belongs in the rankings of all-time best trumpets (which would certainly include Super, Recording, and Super Recording).
