![]() | which Olds are higher quality? I have been searching for the thread that describes the various models of the Olds trumpets. I believe the Ambassador was the "student" horn but I wonder which models come next. Is the recording better than the super etc. Any ideas?

![]() | Re: which Olds are higher quality? There's a debate on the Recording and the Mendez as to which is the better horn. Also, no ones mnetioned the Opera.

![]() ![]() | Re: which Olds are higher quality? There are many that consider the Super to be the best all-around playing model regardless of how Olds positioned them. The Recording has the valve block moved farther forward and also the 2nd valve is offset from the other two so it has some unique features but some do not consider those features to make it more playable than the Super. There are also some other - less well-known - models that don't really fit well into the hierarchy of the models mentioned above but they are very playable, too. In fact, I do not personally know of an Olds model that is not a great playing trumpet. They are built hell-for-stout, too. P.S. This may be the thread that you were looking for: http://www.trumpetmaster.com/vb/f140...per-46308.html (What do you think of this Olds Super?)

The Mendez is ,IMNSHO, one of the best all around horns made, it goes anywhere and will fit into any style. Some (who may or may not have ever spent any time with one) have tried to claim it is a glorified Ambassador with extra junk on it. No, it is a very fine player, rather than drag down the Mendez model I think this comparison lends more weight to the much discussed Ambassador being in most cases a very good playing horn. I think the recording, aside from being one of the most beautiful trumpets ever made, has gotten shoved into the "dark and jazzy" corner. They can do just about anything well. In the more vintage models I have noticed more of a bright quality than in the last ones made which have more density in the sound. Ah, the opera....A large bore monster, beautiful rich tone, broad sound, light feel. Sigh........They aren't making any more of any of them.....
