Olds Opera

I am looking for opinions on the Olds Opera. I know it's a large bore horn. Does that mean a .464? Can anyone that has one tell me what it's like. I'm kind of looking for a classical sounding horn and think this may work.

I appreciate your thoughts.

They are wonderful monster horns. Came in two configurations, Fanfare and the Premiere model. Fanfare is mostly brass with nickel trim, Premiere is mostly nickel silver with brass trim. I think the bore is .468 I will check mine here.......

Re: Olds Opera

From what I understand of its sound, you won't want to try to blend with a bunch of Strads in a section, but it should kick butt in big band or the pit.

Re: Olds Opera

I bought an Olds Opera from a retired orchestra trumpeter about six months ago. He liked to use it on lower Prokofiev parts. I'm still getting used to it, trying to figure out where it goes in my collection. I'm using it at the present with a Monette B4 Flumpet mouthpiece and It is very pretty and thick, but still trumpet-like, and not cornet or flugelhornish.

Never thought of Operas as a big band horn. Would love to try one. Cool looking horn!

Re: Olds Opera

My friend since junior high school owns an Olds Opera which he has vowed that he would "never sell." He still loves it after all these years ... about 40 of them.

Re: Olds Opera

.468 bore. takes a lot of air...but a wonderful horn. Have to agree (unfortunately) about "blending" with Strads, not as bright, but an excellent horn. Have to agree with the preceeding post...mine ain't goin nowhere soon.

Re: Olds Opera

Thank you for your information. I'm trying one out soon. I'll admit I'm not sure I want a .468 bore. I've never played a horn that big. The current owner said that the nickel silver bell gives it a bright sound. Does that seem correct?

Last question, what years were the Operas manufactured?

Thank you again.
