It looked and was described to be in great condition. For a 1959 horn, that horn was very nice. I don't know what they sold for new in 1959 .... but that price had to be close to higher than the original price even if inflation is accounted for.

Very nice horn .....

My Dad bought me a rose brass bell Olds Recording in lacquer for $289 in 1959. In today's dollars that's between $1700-$1800. I still own the horn and have plans to have it refurbished in a few months. It doesn't have any dints, but it has a few little dings from bumping it on music stands through the years, and the lacquer is about gone. It still plays great.

For comparison, I just bought a near-mint 1952 L.A. Recording (unrefurbished) with the more usual lacquer finish for $1000, which given the condition of the horn, I thought was a fair price (and boy what a great horn it is). I see in US dollars that UK one went for about $1440. I haven't ever seen one go higher.

The Olds horns have generally sold for higher prices on eBay UK as there are fewer of them available over here. I sold the following (all refurbished by Leigh!) on eBay UK last year.

Ambassador Cornet (Early 60's) £255 (US$455)
Ambassador Trumpet (70's) £210 (US$385)
Super Trumpet (50's) £450 (US$825)

As you can see they are all well above the prices they would fetch in the US.
