Olds Recording -strange serial swap

My 1952 Olds Recording arrived today. Rose brass bell and leadpipe. Horn was reconditioned by Ziggy Kanstanul in the early 90's and is in like new condition.

Having been an Olds Super player, I find that this takes more support and has a different sound.

Interesting fact-maybe some of you can generate some theories. the horn has a serial number 0f 84XXX, but all three valves have a serial number of 34XXX -the the x's being the exact number they should be. The only number that is off is the 3. Obviously, my first thought was someone buffed the edge of the 3 off or the strike that made the serial number didn't make good contact. These valves look new -no wear. Close examination with a pocket loupe review it is a 3 on each valve. Absolutely no sign of buffing or the strike not making full contact. The 3 is deep and distinct. On the valve case, the 8 is just as distinct. Ideas. Maybe someone had one too many the night before and picked up a 3 instead of an 8?

I think Zig has a sense of humor.....

I had a prewar super I sold awhile back, very early horn. The valves were at least a year earlier serial number....Go figure

Re: Olds Recording -strange serial swap

I'd love to think that Ziggy humorously swapped them, but it seems too impossible. This is a 1952 Recording. The valve serial numbers match the valve casing exactly, except the very first number of the 5 digit serial number is a 3 on each valve, instead of an 8 like the valve casing indicates. The fact that it is a 3, which looks like an 8 if you aren't careful, makes me wonder if whoever numbered the valves picked up the wrong mechanism that creates the number (not sure how the numbers are "created" on valves. I can't see Ziggy having access to 3 valves of the exact number, except they were all made exactly 5000 earlier.

The guy that stamped one or the other might have had a hangover.....I'm guessing he grabbed the three thinking it was the 8 die....
