| Olds Studio trumpet I just bought from a guitar dealer an Olds Studio Model trumpet that he had taken in on a trade for a guitar. The only information I can find on this model is in the Olds Central web site, where my horn is shown in the 1962 catologue segment. In the 1966 catlogue the Studio is called an ultra dark sounding trumpet, whereas, in the 1962 catologue it is described as an ultra brilliant instrument. It looks to me that the Studio went through a radical transformation in materials and design between 1962 and 1966. Mine is one of the earlier models, with the solid nickel bell flare on a brass belltube. Anyone out there that can give me any more info on what I just bought? I am satisfied, thus far, with the brilliancy of tone and the slight amount of built in resistance of this medium bore,( .455" at the I.D. of the second valve slide ). OLDLOU>> |

| Hi Lou, I have owned both, and there is no similarity except valve action. I now use the later model (all nickle-silver), as a poor-man's ConnStellation for Latin/Salsa work. It also makes a "cutting" lead horn for big band [but I have to use a fleece bonnet over the bell for ballads]. The earlier model was a more "all-around" horn and responded (for me) very markedly to different mouthpieces. If you are not happy with the way it sounds now, try a different mpiece first. I think that the earlier model was a better solo/small group horn, but it couldn't keep up with the heat of the later Studio. I would really like to try an Olds Super to see if it would cover both styles with one horn. Have you tried one? |

| Lou, Keep that Studio for a while and I'll bring my 1953 Olds Super trumpet for you to give it a try. I'd like to try that Studio to see how it compares to the Super or the Studio cornet that I own. I visited the Grand Rapids area a while ago and joined you for coffee after the rehearsal if it rings a bell. That was back in May if I'm not mistaken. I should be up in Grand Rapids in October, possibly the 9th. Brian |

| Mezzo Forte User | I have a 1949'ish Studio. VERY versatile horn, you can, as mentioned earlier, change a lot just with the mouthpiece. It can be very brilliant and just one heckuva lead horn, or it can be an exotic Bach 37 clone. Just kinda depends on how you play it and what mouthpiece you use. Nevertheless, I love mine, although I really need to send it off to be overhauled. |
