Olds Studio trumpet

Has anybody ever had a late model Studio (post 67, totally nickel plated) and had the nickel stripped ? What were the results? I have a battered old Studio and it needs professional TLC but the plating is pitted all over, beyond buffing! I know that perceived wisdom doesn't rate the post 67 models anywhere as highly as pre 67 models and this one is not a particularly centred sound so I'm open to a bit of experimentation. Any comments or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

MK

Re: Olds Studio trumpet

There was originally a baked epoxy lacquer on top of the nickel plating. Are you sure you aren't just seeing leprous lacquer?

Re: Olds Studio trumpet

Thanks for the speedy reply John. No, I'm not expert in these things so you could very well be right-I just know it looks dog-rough ! I will be taking expert advice before committing to any course of action but I'm still interested in other experiences and experiments !

Re: Olds Studio trumpet

My Olds Studio has been ripped apart and put back together and it goes like a blooming rocket !!! The nickel was stripped and it's been plated with gold highlights a la Stomvi. The bow of the main tuning slide had severe red rot and has been replaced with a bronze bow. All the work was done by Will Spencer who liked it so much that he's now after one for himself-the more derelict the better. If you have a similar Olds Studio wreck contact will at Will Spencer - trumpets, brass repairs & snake oil . If you can see my photos (which should be public) you'll see what sterling work Will has done.

Re: Olds Studio trumpet

Hi Old Lou,

If you had a C trumpet you were willing to part with, I have a Nickel plated Studio with the first valve thumb trigger I might be willing to trade for. The lacquer is coming off, and there is some pitting through the nickel into the brass of the valve casing. I was told that stripping the lacquer and polishing the nickel plate was a good option by a friend that restores horns for a living....but haven't gotten to it thus far.

I'd have to pull it out and have a look at it to see what condition it's in...I remember it playing rather well. It's been slated for getting to.....but is still not all the way up on the list.

Let me know if you have any interest (or anyone else for that matter). Been looking for a halfway decent C for some time, but don't have the chump change at the moment. Looks like thinning out the heard might be a good way to get there. I also have a Olds Special Cornet that I'd consider trading as well.

Brian
