Smile Olds Studio vs Special Comparisons

I know this may have already been covered but I just acquired my first Olds. It is a 1950 LA Studio model in very good to excellent but not mint horn SN 59XXX. I collect and play mostly Kings and Conns but always wanted a LA Olds. I picked this one up for $70.00 with new springs, felts, pads and sonic cleaning. As a new Olds owner can someone give me a comparison of this years quality and models as compared to the newer Fullerton horns?

My first impressions are good but I need more time on it to really make any comparison to my upper end Kings or Conns. The thing is heavy though and appears to be a quality well built horn.

I am also the owner of an L.A. made Olds Studio Model trumpet. In my rather large 'accumilation' of trumpets and cornets I have many fine quality and fine performing trumpets. I rate my Studio Model at the top, or, very nearly so, bested only by my York Master Model and York Symphonic. The Olds has a more brilliant tone than my Yorks or Conns, somewhat like my King Liberty or Silvertone, with a bit more projection in a large auditorium. Along with the fantastic valves I suppose that this brilliance and projection are what endear me to the Studio Model. I also have a later made nickel plated Olds Studio Model, the one with the first valve trigger, that is just a bit too dark for most of my playing, but, still a fine horn. Judging from your signature, you like bright sounding trumpets and should fall in love with your newly acquired Olds.

I have a mid-60' Fullerton Studio (no 1st valve trig) and have compared it to a friend's LA model. Same horn to my ear, bright as the mpc you pop on, cool as you want it to be. The difference? Age and provenance and price. Zig Kanstul was at the Fullerton plant and I think we all know that he knew what he was doing.

I also happen to have an early Fullerton Olds Recording that is as good as any Recording model I've played.

Do you also own a nickel-plated late-1960's Olds Studio cornet?
Olds said that it also had a very dark tone.
Olds Central told me that they assume that the bore size is about a .468.
Although I have never played one, I think it is probably on my "Wish List": If I owned a 1948 Conn 22B trumpet and a 1966 Olds Studio cornet then I could stop looking at other instruments and finally die a happy man.
Of course, with my amateur skills I am not worthy of either instrument, and with my bank balance I'll never afford either instrument, but what a beautiful *tone* those 2 instruments would give playing ballads.

Thanks all for the feedback and yes Lou you have me pegged, I like the bright horns for sure. I like the early King Liberty SilverTone and the Conn Vocabell. The Studio slots well but takes a little more force to project than the Silvertone or Vocabell but is a pleasure to play so far. I plan on hitting it with some tunes in the higher range today and see what happens. It feels like it has more to give once I get used to it.
