Re: Getzen Super Deluxe CORNET

The Reynolds 7A that my son us's with his old 1946 Holton Peashooter is a V cup with flat rim. It is not what I would call classic V or Vintage V It is a V and has a steep V angle but right before you get tot he throat entry point it rounds at the last minute. The rim is not wide it is rather narrow but it is almost completly flat. On the Peashooter the 7A sounds best but on more modern designs he use's a Yamaha 14B4 which is almost a completly opposite design it has a very deep and steep cup that is C shaped at the bottom it looks like some on took a sphere gently pushed down on it then extended the side up in a colum to meet the rim. I would say it is between a 3C-5C on a Bach chart.

What we really like is some custom ones from Picket Brass I need to send them back and then order them with a few changes. I find that V cups often play better on vintage trumpets then the rounded cup's favored today. On modern trumpets I do not think it makes as much of a difference I think they are more forgiveing then the old vintage ones. The older the trumpet, tuba or Euphonium the more pronounced I think the difference in todays mothpieces versus the ones that came with the instrument. In fact when people have problems with intonation and tuneing on vintage instruments one of the first things I recomend is trying a moutpiece of the same vintage or a reproduction their of. 6 out of 10 times it solves the problem.

This is true. I play a 140 year old Lehnert cornet in a Civil War band. It's a very good cornet for the era, but has certain intonation "problems", as most of these old horns do. After playing it for years on various Bach, Schilke, Conn, etc. mouthpieces, I bought a very deep, conical, period mouthpiece for it. It's more demanding to play, but the sound is beautiful and the intonation is much better.

The cornet:

Re: Getzen Super Deluxe CORNET

I notice in the pics of that no name cornet mouthpiece that it has little or no 'cut' just under the rim and a large throat boring. How is the articulation? I have a very similar H.N. White mouthpiece, except that mine has a very small throat. Can you guage the throat of yours with the shank of a number drill that is a proper fit in the throat?

I'll check the throat on Friday. The articulation is a little more "sloppy" than with a more mainstream mouthpiece - you have to blow harder to accomplish fast 16th note passages cleanly. The old cornet speaks better with this piece, though, and has a better dynamic range. This period mouthpiece stinks on a modern cornet, though - a really dull and diffused sound.

Re: Getzen Super Deluxe CORNET

Well, it's Friday, and I checked the throat of the 19th century mouthpiece I posted earlier. Lou, it's about an 18, which is larger than I thought it would be!
