Getzen Super Deluxe cornet
Can someone tell me about this cornet. I just purchased it on eBay for a bit over $100.00 - can't go wrong there now can we?....seller says he can't find a serial # which to me is a little unusual. He states that on the second valve there is a stamped # - G575 which could be the serial # but perhaps he's misreading it somehow - not sure. I have checked the Getzen list and can't find anything that even comes close. I know that post fire #'s were pre-fixed with certain letters - but not a G and not a four digit # either.
Anyway - I have heard a lot of pro's and con's regarding the Getzen Super Deluxe trumpet - more con's than pro's - so I wondered if anyone here has anything good to say about the Getzen Super Deluxe cornet.........? Its still here ----> Vintage Getzen Super Deluxe Two-Tone Trumpet - eBay (item 280301647994 end time Jan-18-09 14:11:29 PST) Any input is greatly appreciated.....Philip

Re: Getzen Super Deluxe CORNET

Their is nothing wrong with the Super Delux Tone Ballanced Getzen's other then their age and how much trigger time they have seen! The trumpet's had paper thin bells so most of them have been crumpled and rolled out at least once. Then you have the age thing again many of them where bought to be used daily and their valves often show this. They are an easy playing nice sounding pro horn when you can find one in good shape which is rare.

Now as tot he Cornet I am not sure maybe OldLou could give you some info on them. I do not recall ever hearing a Getzen Cornet played in my life. I would imagine that it will be a lot like the Trumpet's in terms of pro's and con's. If the valves are in good shape and the bell is not damaged it should be a good playing instrument. You have to understand that The Super Deluxe line was a very very affordable pro line offered from Getzen so a lot of students flocked to them as did pro's with not so deep pockets that just did gig's here and their etc......

Re: Getzen Super Deluxe CORNET

hi , my son has a few of them and we have never had a problem , his music teacher was a bit surprised when he got his first Getzen student 300 shepherds crook, then my son got a power bore , of course the sound and projection really changed and became his school horn.
Now I am just as interested to hear from the TM community as you are.

Re: Getzen Super Deluxe CORNET

I have an old Getzen 80 cornet which was a student school - owned horn, but is in good shape other than the finish. Valves are stll good. I plan to play it on some numbers in our upcoming concert program. The cornet (long of course) is noticeably heavier than my other ones and has a nice tone, tending to the trumpetty, but more rounded and mellow, depending on what mp you use. It plays well in tune and can project pretty well.

Re: Getzen Super Deluxe CORNET

I am using my King 7M v cup that was on the horn when I got it from the school system in trade. I also have a similar Roth V cup that came with my Cornet, Bach 5c, 101/2c,7C plus others. I am always looking for a vintage Olds 7c cornet mp to complement the trumpet one I use a lot. They work best for me at this time.

There is a King 7M on ebay now with a starting bid of .99.King 7M Cornet Mouthpiece - Silver plate - L@@K !!! - eBay (item 190281374975 end time Jan-26-09 14:53:13 PST)

Re: Getzen Super Deluxe CORNET

Well folks.........I received the Getzen cornet today - played it - and decided to donate it to Settlement Music School here in Philadelphia. It is a good horn - just not a player for me. But this is what I do with all of the horns I win on eBay that are not quite right for me, but that may very well be right for someone else. Settlement is a school where kids from the so-called 'neighborhoods' can go for lessons - not necessarily free, but the program is so arranged that no one is turned away, nor does anyone go without an instrument and/or professional level instruction. So ............thank y'all for your input and your concern - as is usually the case in this good forum..............Philip De Genova

Good deal. Nice of you to donate the horn. I notice you have a Conn Director cornet; How does it stack up against the Getzen?

Re: Getzen Super Deluxe CORNET

Dear Dan and Dale.......here's a little clip from their site: and a link and address Settlement Music School P.O. Box 63966 Philadelphia, PA 19147 215.320.2600 Link to site ----------> Settlement Music School : About

"Settlement Music School is the largest community school of the arts in the United States. With six locations in South, West and Northeast Philadelphia, Germantown, Jenkintown and Camden, New Jersey, the School serves more than 15,000 students each year without regard to age, race or financial circumstances, and awards more than $2 million annually in financial aid and scholarships.

Settlement is dedicated to its mission of providing children and adults with the highest quality individual and group instruction and activity in music, dance and the related arts. Settlement provides a wide range of programs for preschool, school age children, adults and seniors." ........end quote

Mario Lanza got his start there and many other famous Philly musicians spent their formative years in music there. I studied flute there as a young man - pretty much free of charge. They are very grateful when they receive donations and always send a very nice letter of acknowledgment out to the donor.

So.............thanks for your concern........

PS......The Conn coprion is on its way now from Ontario, so I haven't had a chance yet to 'review' it - I found it on Kijiji for $100.00.........in perfect condition........pretty good huh? ...........Ok thank you .......Phil
