Re: Recommendation for Vintage Cornets

If you use a vee cup mouthpiece you have a darker tone and good flexibility. Using C cup mouthpieces makes the cornet more "trumpet like".
The issue with vintage horns is what you have to invest to make them "pro quality" again. Sometimes a newer horn like a Boosey&Hawkes, Taylor or Smith/Watkins is a better, more playable alternative.

Some vintage horns may need a little work but it is still easy to find them in near mint condition for a fraction of the cost of a lower quality new cornet. I have a couple King masters made in the 1940s and both are in excellent near mint condition. The valve plating is excellent and both horns have some of the fastest and smoothest action of any horn I've played. If copying is the sincerest form of flattery then that explains why Conn chose to copy the King Master as their top end cornet. I would expect other horns like the Buescher to show up in a list of "Best Cornet" but I think the Master would also be in most of those lists also. PS - I paid less than $100,00 for each of my Masters. Keep looking and you can find one also ... GOOD LUCK !!!

Re: Recommendation for Vintage Cornets

I'll second Tom's Buescher on looks alone.

Did anyone mention Holton yet? I had an early 50's Holton Model 29 that was every inch a pro-level cornet. Dark tone, easy to bend notes (as the guitarist in me would say).

Re: Recommendation for Vintage Cornets

Another viable candidate would be something like my 1920 made Holton Clark Model extended cornet. It is definately a sweet one.

Re: Recommendation for Vintage Cornets

What about the Conn long series cornets (i.e. 28A)? They do not appear to be true cornets but the option is there

Re: Recommendation for Vintage Cornets

I think older Holton horns in general are vastly underrated. I've been sort of looking for a Holton 48 but hesitate because it'll be fabulous like by grandfather's Buescher 400, and why do I need two fabulous horns?

I love my '60s Collegiate and Super Collegiate cornets and would generally recommend them to anyone...but the original poster is looking for a horn without tight slotting. The Holtons I have both slot tightly, and the tone is on the bright side of the cornet tonal spectrum. They're probably not what the OP is looking for.
