![]() | Re: Recommendation for Vintage Cornets This was a Pro Level horn for sure. A Super 20 Trumpet is what Harry James Played. Ziggy Elman played a Super 20 Master Cornet. The Libertys were made first then the Super 20s. These are some of the best highest quality horns made. The Libertys were wonderfuls horns and the Super 20s are a step up. The Super 20 Master Model had the micro tuner and were available as brass, silver plate or as either SilverTone or SilverSonic Sterling belled versions. They wee made into the 1960s and the lae 1950s were the best in my opinion.

| Pianissimo User | Re: Recommendation for Vintage Cornets Now may I ask, What is the difference between a pro cornet, and a pro trumpet when speaking in evaluating terms? Surely its all sound, but what should one look for in a cornet? What is a beautiful cornet sound?

As for the price, that's about what you would expect for a horn that was just overhauled. Or you can buy one in original condition on ebay for less than $250 and have it overhauled by your person of choice, which is what I did. That was more expensive, though. Oh, and it will play pretty well with just about any cornet mouthpiece you care to try in it. I've used multiple from a Schilke 14 to a Wick 3 and they all sound great. Tom

I've had a chance to talk to the guy, he said besides the lacquor loss, the horn was in very good condition before overhauling it. I'm looking at an Olds Super as well, but I really like how the Buescher looks...I'll let you know! | |

![]() | Re: Recommendation for Vintage Cornets Ended up buying a restored Olds 1950's Super cornet from him. He had one that was not listed, real nice guy - guarantees his work for a year, 7 day trial - hope it works out... If I knew how to post pictures I would! ![]() | Re: Recommendation for Vintage Cornets I have 1946 Conn 80A. This horn has dark warm tone but can be bright depending on what mouthpiece I use. Either way its a very solid instrument both in quality and tone. Also I have a Holton Collegiate C602. I've seen these occasonally on ebay going fairly cheap. Although these are classed as student horns they are as good as some pro horns and well worth a try. If I play with a trumpet type cup it cuts like a trumpet but with a deep cornet cup it has that lovely warm traditional cornet sound. Both of these horns play very nicely but both are in good shape and have been well looked after. |
