![]() | Repair Question regarding 48B Vocabell Leadpipe. Hi, I'm new here--primarily a trombone player but branching out into some cornet and trumpet. I'm also an amateur tech with a pretty well-stocked shop. I recently purchased a 48A cornet. It has its share of dings, and the leadpipe tube is pretty badly beaten up. I'm wondering if the leadpipe on these horns is like a trombone leadpipe (i.e. an internal venturi which can be removed) and if so, is it integral with the mouthpiece receiver? I'd like to roll out the leadpipe on a mandrel, but I don't want to do any damage. Second question: Has anyone set one of these up with friction-fit removable inner leadpipes (which are popular with trombones)? It seems to me that a second leadpipe would give the option of using a trumpet mouthpiece, and Conn Loyalist claims that the receiver is the main difference between the 48A and the 48B. Would something like that add to the horn's versatility, or would it just be a useless modification? Thanks Last edited by Euphanasia; 10-18-2009 at 12:29 AM. |

![]() | Re: Repair Question regarding 48A Vocabell Leadpipe. You're right. I got the letter wrong. It is indeed a 48A, with the cornet receiver. So, after snooping around, what I found was that the only visible interruption of the internal tubing occurs at the end of what would be the outer tube of the tuning slide on a normal cornet. From that point back it appears that there is a continuous leadpipe which tapers back to the receiver. That would make it somewhat longer than a trombone leadpipe. Anyhow, the question still stands. Has any of you had one of these apart to the extent of removing whatever is inside of that outer sleeve? |

![]() | Re: Repair Question regarding 48B Vocabell Leadpipe. I have a 48A that had a terminally rotten leadpipe concealed inside a pristine outer sleeve. Thanks to Rich Ita, it now has a trumpet leadpipe and mouthpiece receiver inside a new sleeve, and is a really nice playing trumpet. Despite what the Conn Loyalist says, there are many differences between the 48A and 48B. The bore is different, the amount of conical tubing is different (the 48A has a dual-bore tuning slide), the proportions are different, and I believe the bell taper is different.

![]() | Re: Repair Question regarding 48B Vocabell Leadpipe. Thanks for the response. I was able to pull the leadpipe. It's a pretty substantial chunk of metal compared to that of a trombone. I've given up on the idea of having a removable leadpipe and separate receivers, since it does appear that the horn is built to play like a cornet and should thus have a cornet mouthpiece. Now it's a matter of polishing it out and getting it off to Anderson for a re-plate. Someone had the nerve to actually PLAY the thing, rubbing off most of the plating on the valve section. ;) |
