Have a chance to pick up a CR58 Reynolds Medalist Cornet from the mid 60's. Have a little distance to drive to try it out so I thought I would get some opinions before I made the trip.

They are good, solid student cornets. That period of manufacture is good. Think Olds Ambassador for comparison. reynolds cornet, great deals on Brass on eBay! There are several on Ebay now, some considerably over priced in my opinion.

As usual, I have little to complain about from Dave's opinion about the Reynolds Medalist cornet. I own and use one extensively. Mine has a severe 'acne' problem with its lacquer coating. Other than that it is a very good, sturdy, in tune with itself cornet with spectacular valves. In short, I like it.

Thanks, I think I will definitely try it out.
Bought it and love it. Like Lou said, the valves are spectacular-smooth, fast and comfortable. Had to have the mouth piece removed and the finish is spotty but plays great. Need to purchase a case for it. Does anybody have a used cornet case they would like to part with?
Be careful that the case you buy will accomidate the dimensions of that particular cornet. Many are made for specific instruments with internal saddles to hold the valve engine in place. Some of these saddles can be moved to make the instrument fit the case, but, some are not movable. Some are made with a depression that fits the specific horn. I have a rather extensive 'accumilation' of various cornets. Some have valve engines set far forward, some are extremely tall in profile, some are shepherds crook design, etc.. Make certain that whatever case you buy for your Medalist will fit, or can be modified to fit your horn.

Thanks for the advice, Lou. I hope I'm not looking for a needle in a hay stack. I sure don't want to spend more for the case than the instrument.
CONN CORNET CASE 1958-1962 TWEED & BLACK - eBay (item 120452144638 end time Aug-01-09 10:43:21 PDT)
Here is one that would probably work. I have a couple of old cases that contain my Getzen and American Standards, but would probably only sell them with the horns.
Nice Cornet Case fits Conn Olds Buesher Bach King etc - eBay (item 230361550811 end time Aug-03-09 19:05:50 PDT)
Here is another one.
I don't know what you paid for the cornet, but cases can be a tricky match, as Lou says. However the wrap on yours lends itself to a decent fit in many cases.

My budget is $10-$20. I can buy a new one for $39.
I don't know where you are, but sources could include advertising for one on Craigslist, local music stores, etc. Shipping cost to most places I have found were $10-15 for case and horn, when I have sold some. Good luck
