Selmer Grand Prix

So on the wonderful world of Ebay I bought myself a Selmer Grand Prix with a man date of about 1949, sorry I havent got any pics up as I am a little slow with posting things up. Have any of you guys played these horns (not the K-mod or the bal)? and how did they play different to the k mods or the Armstrong balanced?

regards from a new member

Re: Selmer Grand Prix

I played one for years, but I have never played the others you mention so I can't compare them. Mine was the same bore size as a modern medium large but a lot of them are narrower bore.

Mine had a more compact sound than a Bach 37 and it was better in the upper register but it was a very full sound, not thin like the narrower bore ones. It also had the stop rod for change to A.

Re: Selmer Grand Prix

Hello, I have Selmer Grand Prix 1947, I have played others but I always stick with me Selmer when I was playing in gigs, Mine has a bright clear sound, the bell is artistically decorated and when you thump it, it sound like tin, not the dull thud like on the newer models.
If you ever heard the brass section from a 1970's band called "MALO", that is the kind of sound it is capable of which I love.

Great buy on your part

Can I ask how much you paid for it? just curious.

Hey Mate...not right on point, but I have a silver Selmer Deville and I think it is a VERY good trumpet by ANY standard. I had a Selmer K-mod lightweight years ago and also liked it a lot. Oh, and a Selmer Radial a few years ago...played really big and full....don't know why I sold it......., but I will never get rid of my Deville

I paid US 559 does that sound like a decent price for it? I've always wanted an old(er) Selmer horn! (I hang out with sax players hah hah)
