Serenader Trumpet

I recently acquired a trumpet from a friend & want to sell it, but I cannot find any information about it.

The bell is marked B and J Serenader. It came in a very old case which smells pretty musty, but is in pretty good shape. All I could find on this was one photo and that the name B and J stands for Buegeleisen and Jacobson. It is marked 1892 on the end by the mouthpiece. It is a gold color, except for the mouthpiece which is a silver color. There are a few dents & dings and needs a good cleaning.

There are 3 valves and the tops have mother of pearl. They are marked 1, 2, & 3 on one side and number 2212 on valve 2 on the other side. It also looks as if it has been fixed/welded in one area.

Can anyone give me any info and/or approximate value of this? I don't want to rip someone off or ask too much, but I don't want to sell myself short either.

Here are a few images of it.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Re: Serenader Trumpet

Hi, welcome to the forum. The horn looks like it is in good shape. Do the piston's move up and down ok, and the slides pull out or stuck? I am not familiar with that manufacturer. Not mentioned on Horn-u-copia other than the B & J reference under tradename Serenader. Common straightforward design and probably dates to 30's-40's. Is there any indication of a foreign orgin, like a country's name stamped anywhere? It is hard to place and exact value, but I would say under $100.

You can go to Ebay-musical instruments-brass-cornet/trumpet then there is an "other options" link on the left column under the maker's listed there. That will give a menu where you can check "unspecified" an get to the listings of a wide variety of horns. There will be some similar in design or age there you can make comparisons with that are not categorized separately.

Hope this helps.

Re: Serenader Trumpet

Thanks for your reply. Sorry forgot to mention that the valve is marked Made in Italy and the pistons all move easily up & down. I don't know much about these, so I have only tried to remove the mouthpiece, which came apart pretty easily. Overall, it is in pretty good shape.

I have also been having a lot of trouble finding anything about that company, except as references on a few different sites. Very strange that there is not much info about this company and none to be found on eBay, although there are some similar to it.

Re: Serenader Trumpet

Well, it is not unusual not to find out info on on imported "stencil" trumpets. I have been researching horns for a couple of years and the road blocks to info are enormous in many cases. It was probably imported to sell here my B &J, who may have been a large merchandiser, Music store, etc. that wanted instruments marked with their own name. If you go to Horn-u-copia you can browse the field. There is a section explaining what stencils are, etc. There is always something new to be learned.

Well, hate to burst your bubble but I actually have the "De luxe" version of the Serenader with an original Italian mouthpiece marked "Cantabile." It is a nice looking trumpet but it is NOT a good playing horn. It might have some value as a "collectible," but no one will buy it as a playing instrument. Mine even has a "corrugated" finish (multiple indentations as a design) I have it on my fireplace mantle as a "visual curiosity."
