Hm. Charlie Melk has the advantage of being the third generation in his family for brass repair; he learned a lot from his father and grandfather, so contacting him about your Martin might be useful. From a geographic perspective, east-coast US has advantages, so that would suggest Josh Landress in NYC or Osmun in Boston. Both have very good reputations.

You almost have TOO many choices!

Yes I do feel like there is a lot of choices, I guess I'll just have to pick one.
    Thanks for all your input.
    Cheers

Robb Stewart in Arcadia, California is right up there with Charlie Melk ... not cheap but you do get what you pay for.

I have an Olds Super that Charlie Melk restored and the work is superb.

However, as Tom is close geographically to Charlie Melk, Dan Oberloh is 1/2 mile from a good friends place here in Seattle so it's real easy to stop in and see him...besides...as entrancing1 shows..his work is superb and so he gets to do most of what I need done. I've had him do several of my horns and have always been really pleased. Not fast, not cheap, but the good quality work is worth waiting for. Trust me...I had to have Dan repair the work done by a highly recommended so called expert (his name has not been mentioned here so far and I think he has quit the business).

    Thanks Randy,
Im in Newfoundland Canada so any shop is not going to be close by.
I'm going to have to ship no matter what.

Also maybe I should also be asking who to avoid?

The Martin horn I have is rare, as are many owned by TM members I'm sure and I want the best quality work.
Time is not an issue, and a few hundred extra in the end, if the work is superb, is well worth it.
    Cheers
    Mike

I live closer to Charlie Melk, but I can absolutely vouch for Dr. Valve. I personally haven't had any of my horns restored by him, but I've seen and played several horns that he's done and they were all fabulous. If I'm not mistaken, he has Charlie do his lacquering.

Thanks Eric I'm considering Steve at Dr. Valve for the job. Have you had restoration work done and who did you go with?

I've actually never had any of my horns restored. I don't find a need for it. I've made a point of only buying trumpets in solid playing condition and will likely keep it that way. I suppose if I win the lottery some day I may restore a horn or two in my collection, but for me the cost is too much if it already plays well.

That said, I've had lots of work done by Charlie Melk over the last nine years. Whether it was routine maintenance, a Melk/Bach conversion Eb, repairs, custom work or whatever, everything has exceeded my expectations. I've seen and played many of his restorations and the workmanship is as good as it gets. I have not had any work done by Steve Winans, but my conversations with him have been very informative and helpful, and as I said before I've seen and played his "projects" first hand. I also have trusted friends that have instruments that have had serious work done by Dr. Valve-all top notch.

Re: Trumpet repair shop reccomendations for valve and plating work

I had an overhaul recently done by andersons. I must say the replating was flawless. But the overhaul part a little less so. Plus, never had any contact with the guy who actually worked on my horn. You may need more contact with the guy who's actually working on your horn. Especially if there are a lot of issues.
