Trying to find information

Hi all,

I used to play the cornet a good 20 years ago now, but my son is learning the trumpet, so this has encouraged me to maybe play again.

I used to have a Boosey and Hawkes Regent Cornet, other than that I have no other information, but mine was frosted silver only way I can describe it, it wasn't shiny. I would like to find one like it, but have no idea where to start, I cannot find a picture or anything about it, I really wish my Dad never sold it. The instrument was second hand when he bought it in the 70s.

If anyone knows anything about this cornet or where I could look to find one again, I would be so grateful, thanks for reading

You mean like this;

Boosey & Hawkes Regent Cornet on eBay (end time 29-Oct-09 16:02:24 GMT)

However, the frosted finish wa sused on many different cornets by both B&H and Besson during several decades from the 50's so there are lots to choose from other than the Regent which was the bottom of the range and the cheapest cornet available in the UK for quite some time.

This 'Imperial' is amuch better cornet than the Regent and is usually in frosted finish,..this one has been polished repeatedly to get rid of the frosting which was hated by just about everybody except, it seems, you....

Is the "frosted silver finish" of your old one the only difference,
or do the ones I linked to also have a different tubing shape?

An instrument model can be available in a variety of finishes from lacquered brass to polished silver to satin silver to... and still be the same model.

Is the only one you'll settle for one that has exactly the same finish type as your old one, right down to the exact sub-type of silver finish?

Well you know I am not an expert and it is many years since I saw mine, but I just remember the frosted silver finish, and now I am learning that it is cheap much to my amusement, but I just wanted to find one like I had I guess the polished silver wouldn't be so bad if it is the same model being the regent. I am not interested to play other than for my amusement, and find the instrument I was used to. I always thought that mine was special because it was frosted!!!

I thank you for providing me with some information, even though I can play I am clearly a novice in the difference, as I have no clue

Re: Trying to find information

If you want to PLAY, get a cornet, any one, and DO it. It is about music, not the horn.
If you want amusement, spend the next X years searching for the horn you think you want. The amusement will evaporate when you find it.

Yes I saw that on ebay, however I am not in the uk anymore, i am in canada so finding one seems to be difficult, but that particular is polished if my eyes don't deceive me, but the instrument I am sure is the same one I had..

As I said in the previous post, I am disappointed that my frosted finish was to save costs when manufacturing the instrument, I always thought it looked rather nice but oh well!!!

Thank you to you all for helping me with this, I will have to compromise I think, I want to play again, to please my father who loved to hear me playing, and well he isn't so young anymore, so I want to practise so that when he visits next year I can play a tune or two, incidently he always loved my old cornet as well, guess we were novices !!

Yes I understand what you are saying, and that is probably what I will do, but I had a big love of that cornet at the time so that is why I wanted it, thank you for your answer..and think we all have a variety of mixed reasons why we stopped or start to play again, each to our own

Re: Trying to find information

The forsted finish was not "to save costs", it was simply the finish that B&H/Besson aplied to all their brass instruments form about 1950 up to the mid 70's. When I taught young military musicians they were issued with 'Imperial' cornets and they tried hard to impart a shime to the frosted silver. Many of them, particularly the young women, were successful in turning the finish into a 'satin' texture. As far as I am aware the regent was only availble in the frosted finish as were most B&H instruments. The frosted finish was very unpopular with players and was discontinued because of that.
