Vintage Bach Mercury Model trumpets

Hello all!
For some time now I've wanted a vintage Bach...(New York, Mt. Vernon) I've come across several NY Mercury Models, and they seem like interesting, cool, old horns. I would love one, as they seem to posess excellent playing qualities, without the Strad price.
I know of two, both a NY and a Mt. Vernon, both for approx. $1000. I don't know the condition of either, however, and I've seen two in good-great shape go for well below that on ebay lately.
What are the pro's and con's of these horns, and does anyone have one in good shape(cosmetics aren't a huge problem, as long as it is structurally sound), that they are willing to consider parting with?(For a reasonable price, I am a student in High School, and my horn budget is quite limited)
I would like to know anything about these horns, as I find them pretty interesting.
Thanks

Beware, son, and apologies to the horn sellers here. From your signature it looks to me that you are well on your way to becoming a trumpet/cornet 'accumilator' like me. In the future this will cause you severe problems with your significant other and with your banker, too. Beware!!!!!!!!!!!! Just look at my signature. It isn't a complete list, either.

Re: Vintage Bach Mercury Model trumpets

I’ve got a Mercury SN # 15349 that was built Oct. 18, 1956 and it is a nice playing horn. It has a tight focused sound due to the 31K bell that was typically found on cornets. The bore is rather small ( .448 ) and has nickel silver valves. It is a high quality instrument that was built from the same parts bin as the Strads by Vincent himself. However, these horns lacked the tuning adjustment rings on the 1st and 3rd valve slides. This was in order to offer the horn at a lower price point. One neat feature is that the valves and valve caps are stamped with matching SN#s to the horn. If you really like Bachs and you can find a nice one I would say grab on to it as they are nice playing and sounding horns.

Thanks for the input, guys!
I only know the basics about these horns, but I really like the looks, as well as what I've read about them.
I do have plenty of horns, but not one of them goes unplayed. My budget comes from yard work, cleaning, etc, as I'm in high school, but there's no harm in dreaming, is there?

Re: Vintage Bach Mercury Model trumpets

Hello, TM,
As I was on the topic of non-Strad vintage Bachs, I have another question that hopefully somebody out there will be able to answer.

I've asked about Mercury Model Bachs, but what about a Mt. Vernon Mercedes Model? They appear to have more features than the Mercurys, such as a moveable third-valve slide, hex-nut leadpipe reciever, etc...
Are these considered a notch above the Mercurys, and what would one in fair structural, yet poor cosmetic condition be worth?

Thank you all in advance

The NY Mercedes was the same as a Medium bore (lightweight) Strad with a 38 bell and 7 leadpipe. No options to make it more expensive. The Mt. Vernon Mercedes had a 38 two piece bell ad regular weight. If you like a medium bore NY or Mt. Vernon Strad the Mercedes is the budget way to go. Sometimes they have nickle silver valves instead of monel. They were only offered in lacquer. They were professional instruments with a few compromises to keep the cost down.

Re: Vintage Bach Mercury Model trumpets

Thanks for the technical specs!
I was looking at a beautiful Mt. Vernon Mercedes on Ebay, but it was "lost" by the seller after he said that he would take $500. There was no BIN, and bids were in...seems fishy to me, but nothing can be proven.

Every once and a while you come across some dishonest people, but I've gotten one of my best deals there.

I'll keep looking, the specs are greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks again
