What bore are they? I have a Kanstul Chicago (now labeled 1000). Assume it is about the same as Kanstul bought the mandrils and tooling from Benge when he died. Mine is very open, bright, easy to play, especially above the staff. Actually, they fit about any style.

They are both ML. I love the sound and feel of the horns. These are my 3rd and 4th Chicago. I also loved the 2 of the Burbank Benge that I have owned. My very favorite is the Large Bore Chicago that I sold in 2008 when times were rough and I really regret it. It is amazing how a horn can make you feel. I felt so connected to that horn! Someday. :)

I will learn to make the pics bigger for better viewing.

BTW. I still have my original olds ambassador that I paid $15 at a tag sale in 1970. Perfect condition that I plan on passing down to my son someday. He so wants to play the trumpet. I just bought an Olds Ambassador for $15 at a tag sale that he will get. Is 9 years old too young?

    No!

But don't you teach him. Get him started with someone else.

You will get different ideas about the right age to start someone on trumpet. I was in 5th grade - age 10. While I am sure someone will post their 3 year old is playing trumpet, My opinion is to avoid going much below age 9. Graysono has good advice with consider having someone else teach him.

My own son started in 7th grade (earliest year band was offered) and I purposely did not start him earlier so to be sure early training came from someone else. About year 2 I offered to play duets with him, and occasionally work on music. It wasn't until last year he figured out he was really getting private lessons from me (always guised in just playing some stuff together). So, go for it at age 9 - if he is interested.

He turns 9 in September, could be a good bday gift. I do like the idea of someone else teaching him. 4 of my daughters played trumpet and sometimes we would practice music before their concerts or marching band competitions. It was much easier to be relaxed if it was not a lesson. Thanks so much for the advice. May need to buy another Yamaha Silent Brass :)
