Vintage Conn, Good deal..

This one might be good for someone who doesn't mind doing a little valve repair. Seems to be in good structural shape otherwise.

Vintage C.G Conn

This one's not bad, either.

1962 Conn Victor

Re: Vintage Conn, Good deal..

The 22B (I'm guessing that's what it is) could be a good deal depending on the final price. The Victor is overpriced, if you ask me. Someone looking for a horn like that should be patient for a better horn/deal. I was looking for a 6B Victor and finally found a good one on eBay with a Buy it Now price of $300. I didn't hesitate, and got it. Almost like new, original lacquer, 1960 model. It pays to be patient and shop around...

Re: Vintage Conn, Good deal..

I'm amazed by the trumpet players I talk to that sneer at Conn trumpets. One trumpet player I knoe syas disdainfully, "I don't like Conn trumpets." When I was in college I was a French Horn major (I am a closet masochist) but i played a Conn 6B during football season to fill out the trumpet section. It was a very fine horn (silver plated, no copper leadpipe as far as I know). It was responsive, went wherever I asked it, and would turn heads in the upper register. I have nothing but good things to say about Conn horns from my experience.

I'll tell ya what my Dad says about Conn

His Mom bought him a Conn Vocabell brand new in 1949 (still has it) when he was in highschool..

He said Conn was considered somewhat of a student horn company by most kids back then. The kids with Olds were considered the rich kids with pro horns.

I played that same Conn Vocabell when I was in highschool. My teachers thought it was a nutzy horn, with that rimless bell. I think Conn did some imaginative things and maybe were considered by gimmicks by some.

Yes, it was a lucky break, but they happen. The 6B had a Coprion leadpipe up until the early 70's, I believe. It's a great horn, with a completely different tone from the Bach Strad I normally play. I played one just like it in high school many moons ago, and this one is the "replacement" for the one I stupidly sold about 30 years ago. It's nicer than my old one...

Re: Vintage Conn, Good deal..

My main horn is also a Bach Strad.

Played my Dad's old Conn Vocabell through most of highschool.
Some of the other kids played these of their dad's old horns:
Olds Super

Then switched to an intermediate Silver Yamaha, then traded up for a Claude Gordon Benge.. Played that for a few years into College and thought I wanted a smaller bore, so I got a Bach Strad, which is still my main horn. I really regret selling my C.G Benge. :(

Just in case anyone tells you kids are dumber these days. Kids have always been dumb.

As a lover of Olds horns,( all of them ), I will never talk them down, but, as an advanced elderly trumpeter, who went through high school playing a King Silvertone trumpet, and alternating with an Olds Recording cornet, I always felt that I had the best of the best. One of my section mates played a Paris made Selmer trumpet, and another a Conn 2B. It didn't ake me long to discover that Conn's top of the line trumpet of that era,( early 1950's ), was definately on a par with Carl's Selmer, or my King and Olds. By the way, my current favorite trumpet from my 'accumilation' is one of those Conn 2B New World Symphony trumpets. I knew in my high school years that Roger Chaffee's Conn was an advanced artist grade horn. Having played it on many occasions, I snatched one up when it became available last year.

Re: I'll tell ya what my Dad says about Conn

In my area Conn ruled for brass instruments. A few trumpet players went with King trumpets and we had a few Olds cornets around as well. Conn was an excellent and long lasting brand.
