Re: which vintage conn you prefer?

I love my "plain jane" 40B vocabell. I would really love to get a 48B, but the wife thinks 12 trumpet/cornet/flugelhorns are enough. I was looking at a nice 48B on ebay this week, but it went over $700.

I love my 1965 38B Connstellation...and hey...I marched with it, played in jazz with it, wind ensemble, and orchestra...great all around horn.

Re: which vintage conn you prefer?

Could I ask a question about the connstellations?

Are they really the "top-line" professional models of Conn? I heard that they were intermediate models, and was curious about buying one just for the love of a vintage piece. But i wouldn't buy an Ambassador for that reason

Re: which vintage conn you prefer?

Connstellations are excellent trumpets, top of the line. They were very popular when they were new and many top pros still play them decades later, even with all the new fancy choices out there!

UMI used the Connstellation name on an intermediate trumpet in the '90s, but it bore absolutely no resemblance to the original 36B and 38B Connstellations.

Re: which vintage conn you prefer?

The original question is like being asked to choose a favorite child. I have a 1923 80A with a functional Bb/A quick-change mechanism. I have used it on recording sessions and in concert bands, pit orchestras, jazz combos, trad-jazz groups, an orchestra (in A!), a polka band, and even a folk/rock band (with a mic, and there too I used the quick-change to A a time or two). I also have a 48B Vocabell (well, a 48A with a trumpet leadpipe and converted third slide) and have used it on recording sessions and in concert bands, jazz combos, big bands, church gigs, the same polka band, the same folk/rock band, and a soul band.

The 80A is the Leatherman Multi-Tool of horns. With the appropriate mouthpiece it will suffice for just about any job though another, more specialized, tool would probably do better.

The Vocabell though... in certain situations -- vintage big-band charts and (believe it or not) ear-bleedingly loud rock gigs -- can't be beat.

If I could only have one horn, it would be the 80A Victor. But since I have more appropriate horns for most of the gigs I play, my favorite vintage Conn is the Vocabell.
