Re: which vintage conn you prefer?

The Flugelhorn V1 OK, I had my fun. I don't have as extensive vintage experience as some other folks on TM (more hooked into new horns) but I liked the Connstelation horn.

Re: which vintage conn you prefer?

My prime trumpet is a Conn 2B New World Symphony. My prime cornet is a Conn 34A Concert Grand. They are both spectacular instruments that I have no desire to ever replace.

The old 22B New York Symphony is a nice horn. I like the early 1960's 38B Constellation and 6B Victor, too. For cornets, an early 60's 5A or 9A (if you can find one) Victor is a good pick. These are the ones I have experience with. I hear that the Concert Grands and 80A's are nice cornets, too.

Re: which vintage conn you prefer?

You can't go wrong with a vintage Conn 22B trumpet. Don't be fooled by the small bore-you can fill these things up and they won't back up on you! Finding ones in good playing condition can be a challenge as many, including my '41 22B are in need of expensive valve rebuilds. However, you can stumble upon good deals on the secondary market for them. Vintage Conns aren't in the demand like all the vintage Olds horns, but they are slowly rising in demand and good ones can have a high resale value. Bottom line is that you really can't go wrong with any of the vintage Conns because up until the 1950s/60s Conn didn't have a student model horn. All Conns were pro-level horns. The 2B will run you a bit higher than the 22B, but worth the money if you can find one in good condition. The Conn Loyalist site is a compilation of Conn info, specs, and history, a great place to start and also a great place to go to identify horns you may find on ebay.

Re: which vintage conn you prefer?

Hello Iamgigi77. Like Ole Lou,I like my 1942 Silver plated, Conn 36A Concert Grand Cornet a lot. The Conn 36A short model long bell Cornets play with a nice mellow in tune Cornet sound. The other highly sought vintage Conn Trumpet; is the rare Conn New York Symphony Special. The Conn N.Y.S.S. was also made with a Coprion bell. These are even rarer than the Brass Silver plated ones. The Conn 2B mentioned by Ole Lou and this Conn N.Y.S.S. are at the top of list of the Conn vintage horns. If a nice Conn 2B or Conn. N.Y.S.S. was to pop up on E-bay. You had better, be eaten a lot of E-Bay wheaties. The bidding will be numerous and high. I had a Conn New York Symphony Special a few years back. Had to sell it, to repair my Truck. During the E-Bay Auction,a fellow called me and begged me to close the auction and pay me $800.00. I did not do it and around 38 bids later, sold close to that $800.00 mark. A pro-player out west in a Air force band won it. He sold off his new Yamaha 8310Z horn, had one of our famous Music. Tech. fully restore this Conn. He told me even before rebuilding this Conn N.Y.S.S.. He had never played a Trumpet that could come close to it's sound, and playability. I later owned two nice King Liberty #2 model Trumpets. They were very good players, but not good as that model Conn.

Re: which vintage conn you prefer?

Who cares about the Conns, they're a dime a dozen and people pay way too much for them.

Try a Buescher.

Part of this comment is "no one likes my horn!" and the other part is "people who play my horn say HOLY CRAP!!!"

At least a Buescher costs a lot less.

Re: which vintage conn you prefer?

For me you can't beat the style or tone of a Conn 40B Trumpet in full art deco trim and I love the Super Victor 80A cornets. OK so I'm an odd ball !!!!
