Re: VINTAGE HORN EYE CANDY

Peninsula Music and Repair are my "go to" guys. Knowledgeable, honest, fair, accommodating....you simply can't ask for better. They're located near me in Los Altos, CA. Boasting a wonderful selection of horns, I've also bought from them...they seem to always have what I need (want!).

For the record....I've purchased 4 horns from them, and had 2 refurbished by them. Bottom line.....they're top notch.

They also handled my '72 Strad...

Re: VINTAGE HORN EYE CANDY

This is my oldest horn, a Buescher Cornet (Possibly an Epoch no. 2?) from 1907. This horn has a fancy engraving and a gold-washed bell. My grandfather played this horn in the 1936 All-State band, as well as using it to bugle in the army (he was a paratrooper with the 101 airborne on D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, and several other well-known conflicts).

And here is my 1920's Buescher Tru-tone, model 9 trumpet, with gold engraving and gold-wash bell.

When my ambassador is back from its overhaul, I'll post pictures of its new, scratch-finished raw brass look.

Those are really nice! Don't forget to post your Ambassador -- I'm really interested in seeing that finish.

Looks great! Will look up the polishes you mention. I like to due less polishing myself and let things age a bit, but like it clean looking, too, as you seem to do.

Re: VINTAGE HORN EYE CANDY

The Olds Royal Family portrait

HRH Mendez couldn't be here, because I don't own one and am not really sure where it might fit in this hierarchy other than by virtue of the name.

Top: 1947 Super (brass tone ring does not show up well in this view)
Middle: ca. 1932 Super Recording (seriously - S/N is 4 higher than the earliest known Super Recording, the one owned by Harold "Pappy" Mitchell
Bottom: 1966 Recording

The cornets couldn't come out to play because the 1951 Recording needs to see Mr. Stewart about a facelift, and the L-12's would just look out of place here.

Re: VINTAGE HORN EYE CANDY

A few cornets. Yes, I'm quitting collecting horns now. There's a Reynolds Argenta on its way (solid nickel silver), but why wait?

Top row: Reynolds Medalist version of Olds A6ST, model number not known; Flip Oakes Wild Thing short model
Second row: George Butler, Haymarket, London, 1865 - 1898 period, with crook, restored by McQueens, Manchester; A. Hall Gisborne, London, 1902 - 1913 period, heavily engraved, restored by Mark Metzler
Bottom: 1961 Conn 38A Connstellation, nickel plated with lacquered brass

Cool! Do you get a stand with that or do you need to hold it up?
