![]() | Re: VINTAGE HORN EYE CANDY That's a nice looking horn and seems like a great buy. Perhaps one day America can do a turn around and offer inexpensive, quality horns again. I would love it if companies could use the same coating that Conn put on their instruments in the 1950s and 60s. That finish could last and last. |

If Bach uses the same serial number system for flugelhorns as it does trumpets and cornets, this horn was built in 1975. When I first bought it about 20 years ago the thing couldn't be played in tune at all. I was very disappointed and even tried to sell it. Then last Spring I decided to take a chance and bought a Bach 7C mouthpiece for it. My jaw dropped open after the first note! Needless to say, I'm going to keep it. |

I plan to become the only jazz peckhorn player in Montana. I got this horn from Goodwill in Spokane. It has a unique sound, sort of like a French Horn, but not as French. My lips are starting to get used to the idea of switching from a big mouthpiece to a little trumpet mouthpiece, but my brain is still struggling with the idea of transposing down a 3rd instead of up 1. (I seldom get to work with actual charts. Usually fakebook music or chord sheets). This horn is at least 69 years old, because Lyon & Healey went out of business in 1940. Lots of horns like this were donated to the Salvation Army. I have reason to believe this one came from Alaska. Last edited by kcmt01; 10-01-2009 at 08:22 PM. |

![]() | Re: VINTAGE HORN EYE CANDY I have a 1913 Conn Circus Bore Cornet in original, beautiful condition with engraving on the bell, satin silver plating and gold wash on and inside the bell. If I can ever figure out how to insert an image, I'll post a couple. I picked it up in an antuque shop for $148.50 two months ago, and all it needed was cleaning and new valve corks (the originals disentegrated). A 96 year old beauty with fast valve action and a gorgeous mellow tone! With a .484 bore, it cand kick out some sound. I am awaiting the arrival of a 1972-73 Olds Recording Trumpet as well. Any thoughts on removing the laquer and leaving it raw metal?? |

In my opinion having a quality finish on a horn preserves the horn. Stripping off lacquer and leaving bare metal will cause the loss of the instrument. The very reason that we can find 60 year old horns in great condition relates to the quality of their original finish. Take a look at Conn horns from 1960 or so and how well many are preserved. Conversely I see Yamaha horns that are expensive that have major finish issues when only a few years old. | |

![]() | Re: VINTAGE HORN EYE CANDY Thnak you for this insight, I was leaning toward having lacquer reapplied as the original is in bad shape, no dents, however, just spotty, pitted laquer (no red rot). I play a Gibson RB4 mastertone banjo that is nickel plated and I constantly fight with tarnish, so I will keep the Olds protected! |

![]() | Re: VINTAGE HORN EYE CANDY Hi, I'm from Germany and I have some nice old horns in my collection: There is a Schuster trumpet from the 1930s which unfortunately show serious spots of corrosion and thus I do not play it anymore (although it is by far my best horn for big-band and jazz). Then I have a Holton New Proportion Cornet from about 1908 in fairly good condition. It only needs some cleaning and then it is a very fine horn. Next I have a Tonk Sterling Trumpet model Bohemia, tunable in A, Bb-flat and C also in very good condition but unfortunately I do not know from when it is. I also own a Conn Victor 8A from 1933, which is my favorite at the moment. Then there is a Knoth Trumpet. It looks like a cornet, but you have to play it with a trumpet mouthpiece. Here I also do not know from when this horn dates. And then there is a strange little cornet bearing the engraving "Wonder Super" but with no sign of the manufacturer. Anybody out there who knows something about it? If you wish I could put in some pictures. Greetings from Germany Hendrik |
