Re: What's a good vintage horn for a newbie?

Hey, you want to pick anything BUT Olds. Just joking. I've just started collecting them so imagine will will be running up the price way above its normal value bidding againsgt eachother. Oh well.

I really like Olds, learning on them as a kid during the 60s. Started on an Ambassador (student horn), moved to Special (step up horn), then to (1962) Super (pro horn). Of course I HAD to get a Bach Strad in HS and college, but eventually got beyond the name, realizing the Olds was superior.
Still have the Super-which my son is now using, so I bought a 1946 Super (in raw brass), 1953 Super (recently gold plated) and 1952 Recording (relacquered by the Zig himself) this past month. The 46 is the best horn I have EVER played, period. Others are also excellent, but 46 is tops.

Hey, A.N.A. Mendez - what is your secret for polishing? I would like my Supers and Specials to look that good.

Re: What's a good vintage horn for a newbie?

I have 3 Supers and one Recording (in fantasitc shape). To me, the Recording has a darker sound than the Supers. Also, I feel I have to work harder on the Recording than the Supers -but that may just be because I played a Super for 40 years and my playing abilities have adapted to the horn (i.e., horn molded me). Sound on a Recording may be a little more dense, but the Super is plenty wide. Either is a good horn. Both are great lead horns.
