Re: would you pay this much for a horn?

Ebay Run away! run away!!!!!!!

I'll say it again, it has the nicknames ThiefBay and Evilbay for a reason.

My own ebay score is over 7000. My total number of transactions is something like 13,000. I know what I'm talking about. Ebay's going the way of Pets.com and it's getting ugly on the way down. My one, ONE horn buying experience on there was disastrous.

Now, deal with reputable dealers. Pawn shops (know how to test/asses the horn although in a pawn the price will often be so low it won't matter much if the horn needs work) reputable web sites, (of which ebay is NOT one) and so on.

I don't care how nice the horn looks, people use each others' photos all the time.

I got out of buying/selling 6 months ago, actually stopped buying 2 years ago.

The deals are just too good, insanely so compared to RipOffBay prices, to ever jump through all those hoops and deal with crooks on there again.

Re: would you pay this much for a horn?

OK looked at the ad...

WOW THAT IS FUDGIN' SCARY!

No, no way, so what if the guy's other IDs give his ID high marks, no, no way. That is far too much money to not deal with a reputable dealer. For that kind of money you could fly to France and buy one of Maurice Andre's old horns, in person.

And that's the only way to buy something this big/expensive/important - in person.

Re: would you pay this much for a horn?

No Kidding! I could just never spend that much on a horn - trumpets are just NOT worth that much! thankfully, my ebay experiences have been pleasant, although I know many are not. My husband did have to report a guitar scam a while ago, though - he didn't bid on it, but recognized it as the same guitar from a different posting that had been done through an account without the user's knowlege...there are some really awful people out there looking to make a fast buck!

Re: would you pay this much for a horn?

Hi All: Have bought several horns for my personal use on the bay,but only from sellers that gave me their email, home#, and address. Am 5 for 5. I mean, what's a totally restored vintage horn like a Committee or an Olds Opera worth? They say the heart wants what the heart wants. Yes, I've seen these two models selling for hundreds more than I payed.Perhaps I've been extremely lucky. But 5 minutes of playing either of these after they arrived and I was in love. Have had several friends play em,especially the Martin. When they put them down...............big smiles & a wow. You do need to be selective & cautious, I agree. I'm only holding 8 horns, but the best price, and the best horns, came the bay-way. There are a couple of guys out there that can still spell " Honor".

Hey Fluegel Girl: Just accessed that site on the 12K horn. Have seen many of "El Smoko's" adds. Great english, huh? Now, as soon as I see the name, badda-bing, gone. Just too much bull,& too much $$$. But remember, there are predators & prey in our world. Good, real people are neither!~!~! But you are right, too radical for me also.

Since that trumpet was used by the 4th chair trumpet player of the Polski Polka Players band in their famous recording of "Lederhosen Louie", that trumpet is obviously worth *twice* what they are asking for it.

Am I the only person who knows anything around here?

Re: would you pay this much for a horn?

Nah, I can believe a trumpet is worth that much .... but back when I did a sport, I had stuff like that GIVEN to me heh heh. If you're a really good player, can you get it with someone else's money? >
