![]() | York Custom Trumpet Hey, I am thinking about getting a York Custom Trumpet from Jarome Callet. I'm not quite sure the year, but it has a .470 large bore. I was curious to see if anyone has played one of these horns, or plays one and how does it play, or rate to today's professional horns? I currently play on a Phaeton 2030 and for me it gets a bit stuffy in the high register, and I want something more free-blowing with a darker sound, but that's good for both lead trumpet in jazz and in a concert band/orchestra.

Most of the cases of stuffiness are not trumpet design problems but BODY TENSION. That is always the first stop for my students - hardware ALWAYS comes LAST! The same goes for "free blowing". The darker sound has nothing to do with bore and is seldom useful when playing lead. I think you are on the wrong track. I am not trying to talk you out of the York, it is just that your post has some "contradiction".

I own and play two models of York 'custom' trumpets regularly. First is my York Master Model which has a copper bell and a 1" Kranz ring along with a flat fold 'French bead' on the bell and a micrometer adjuster for the main tuning slide. A fantastic horn. Second is almost a twin to the first, except that it has a yellow brass bell and no Kranz ring. I got the second one from Robt. Rowe and I am sure that he will testify that it is "a player". With equipment of this level it is a slight bit easier for me to perform at a high level, but, as Rowuk states, "hardware always comes last" in the equation of fine performance. I once heard Manny Laureano switch from one students trumpet to another and made all of them sound spectacular. Your sound is primarily in your mind, not in the equipment. Having said all of that, I have no intention of parting with such fine equipment as either of my Yorks anytime in the near future. OLDLOU>>

I have no earthly idea. Those old York Master Model trumpets and cornets were built back in the mid 1940's. They were very expensive in their day and thus, didn't sell well. This means that finding spare parts and used parts is like finding teeth in the mouth of a chicken. Perhaps one of the current restoration experts can help you. OLDLOU>>
