| Fortissimo User | How to land your first "gig" Everyone hears the big names in orchestras, the likes of Bud, and Chris Martin being two of the most well-known names. But it takes time to get there, and many other orchestras before you have the experience for the larger orchestras. What are some tips you have for getting that first playing job in an orchestra. I will likely start with the college orchestra here in the next few semesters, but will that be enough experience to get into a decent middle of the line orchestra? |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: How to land your first "gig" Hi Nplotts1, Getting an orchestral job is very difficult. Here are few things you can do to help get you on the right track now before you are actually playing in one. Start listening to recordings. If possible try to do it with at least the trumpet parts, if not an entire score. This will help you learn the pieces, but it will also help you to start learning the style that great orchestral players use. Start playing for people. Even if it's just playing an etude for another student. Get used to playing and feeling pressure. Winning an audition is very nerve racking and the sooner you start learning to deal with your nerves the better. Make sure that you are really taking care of the basics now. Good rhythm, pitch and sound are a must to win a job. These are just a few ideas to start. I hope that it is helpful. Best, Andrew |
