Possible Upcoming Threads

Ok this is my last post today. Perhaps I am getting a little carried away, but I'll probably slow down soon. I thought it might be fun to put an upcoming threads thread so you guys would know what I'm thinking about doing. You should feel free to add ideas and I'll try an include them. Here are some things that I am going to write about soon.

Who is your best teacher? It had better be yourself.
Why are Barbara Butler and Charlie Geyer such great teachers?
Where to put your worst playying habits? In your warm up.

Please add any ideas you might have.

I was trying to explain to a student the other day how I would break down their development as a trumpet player. I kinda came up with these approx. numbers. I would be curious as to what you think as well as everybody else.

1. I figure that probably around 70% of a trumpet players improvement comes from time spent in the practice room practicing smart.

2. I figure that a good teacher gets maybe 10 % of the credit.

3. I figure maybe 10 % goes to listening to great players - both recorded and live performances

4. Last 10 % goes to listening to recordings of themselves either practicing or performing.

What do you think ?

Great suggestion. I will get that started soon. I can't believe I forgot it!

Mr. Stomvi,
I think that's a very good break down. The only thing I would include, and I think you may have already implied it, is that they should learn a lot from other students. Either by talking shop, or playing duets etc. I will still follow this idea with another thread about this topic.

what would interest me is your approach to pieces that you have never played before. Do you go at it note for note or first just blow through to get an idea. Do you play all of your solo concerts from memory?

I'm curious about who you tune to while playing and who tunes to you (or should).

My best and quickest improvements in my playing has always been in playing. Not so much alone, but in group setting. Especially setting next to, or the best the group has to offer. I don't whether it's (close up) listening of the performer, or side by side section/ensemble passages, that (if you got your ears on) teaches you playing these passages together....as one. Though these experiences learn phrasing, breathing....everything about it.

I always welcome the opportunity to play with better players than me!

How about: Practice techniques?

Are there any things/ways you practice that are outside of the normal: play it slow and speed it up, play small parts, use metronome, etc...
