Greetings Mr Wise;
I know you have referred to this record before but I found a copy of this album today in the jazz bins at a local used vinyl shop. I am listening to "Mean Dean" as I type this.The format was not quite what I was expecting however the musicianship on this date is, of course, outstanding. I have heard Mr. Amram's Latin Jazz Celebration LP which I enjoyed very much. It must have been interesting freelancing in NYC back then (and still). One of my mantras as a trumpet teacher was "Be Versatile". Any thoughts about the scene past and present, being versatile etc.>

I believe the trumpet section was Markie Markowitz, Joe Wilder and me.

"Mean Dean" is about Eugene Ormandy, "The Man Who's Eyes Could Kill." Legend has it that Ormandy spent a whole season staring at one of the second violinist of the orchestra. That fiddle player committed suicide.

Dave made up the horn section's parts in the studio as we recorded. He is amazing.

The NY scene in the early 70s was unreal, recording sessions were going on all day and all night. I did a Stanley Clarke album that started after midnight. It was done at Jimi Hendrix studio, "Electric Lady," in the Village. Imagine....a vending machine that dispensed beer. Wow

You are correct on the trumpet section. The liner notes also list Thad as being the soloist on Mean Dean. How involved was he in the session scene outside of TJML Jazz Orchestra?

Thad was a member of the Ed Sullivan show orchestra. I don't recall Thad doing much on the free-lance recording scene. Remember that Thad left town to lead an orchestra in Europe. Faddis and Lew were all over the place in the seventies.

I just got a surprise. "The Adams Chronicles", one of the first PBS shows I played lead on, is being re-released. I don't think it's been available for many years.
