Arban Characteristic Studies

These studies have bugged me forever it seems. Last week a question arose about the second study's speed/style. I have never been comfortable with the metronome markings.
It dawned on me that I had the Jean-Marie version of the Arban somewhere in that mess I call my library. I went hunting for the book and found it.
I was not surprised to find the absence of metronome markings, not a one for any of the etudes.
I am working on the first and second studies at much more relaxed speeds.
The music has always spoken to me that way.

I raised that question last week, and after several nights of trying to rigidly adhere to the metronome markings, I spoke to my teacher about it, and we decided that Arban probably intended the studies to be much more up to the student's discretion, and I am much happier playing the second study in a more relaxed way.

Re: Arban Characteristic Studies

How many editions of the Arban are there? I have Clarke; Smith and Goldman; Smith, Goldman and Gordon. I would love to get an unedited version of the book. Does one exist?

Re: Arban Characteristic Studies

I have a PDF version from the library of congress online that says it's revised and compiled by T.H. Rollinson and published by JW Pepper - interestingly, it was edited to be shorter and less expensive and claims to be the only edition available in the US.... I would assume that it was the first one available here in the states - maybe Leduc did the first one....

Re: Arban Characteristic Studies

Thats really interesting to know. I never realised the MM markings were not Arbans. I feel better now!
Thanks,
Roy

Re: Arban Characteristic Studies

I took Chris Gekker's advice to heart -- that the correct style for the Arban studies meant they shouldn't be played to a rigid tempo. But since I'm nowhere near the marked tempo, it's nice to know that they may be overly brisk. I can relax a little :)

Re: Arban Characteristic Studies

Is there any way that Walter Smith intended to leave the MM's off of his Top Tones? :)

I have always loathed practicing the Arban's studies, even when I began playing as a profession. In fact, I would much rather practice Bitsch and Smith's Top Tones over Arban's. I may have to revisit them now in this new light.
