Birth of the Blues

Hey Wilmer,

Here's a blast from the past for you. Who's in that Basie horn section 1965, can you tell?

Ah......Bertha.......I can see the scramble even today.
Sammy, at any time in the show would go to the bridge of the tune, "From a whippoorwill high on a hill"......... That signaled the guys who weren't regular members of Sammy's group to try and find the chart for the tune. It was never where you could get to quickly. There was a unison trumpet section lick in the bridge that was treacherous. Nail it, and it sent chills down the spine. Miss it, and every one doubled over in laughter.

Renauld Jones Jr. was Sammy's lead player. His dad, Renauld Sr., was playing lead with Basie around the same time . Thad Jones, Joe Newman, Wendell Cully were the other guys in that section.
I recognized his conductor, George Rhodes and his percussion guy, Johnny "One more tine" Mendoza. Frank Wess had a moment on camera, but they didn't show the rest of the band much.

I had a chance to play lead for a couple shows with Sammy, he was a gas They don't make them like this anymore.
