I got to wondering about this after ITG this past week.

I attended the Rafael Mendez clinic, and there were recorded excerpts of his playing. His characteristic vibrato was, obviously, there for all to hear.

Then, I went to hear Frank Kaderabek, and in his performance, he used a vibrato that was similar, though not to the extreme. Still, I could hear that in his playing.

I listened to Mike Sachs play the Posthorn solo, and his vibrato was more subtle...far more. Much more like the many players we hear today. Same with Mathias Hofs, Rodney Mack and Eric Abrier. I expected much more on the Artunian or from a French performer than what I heard.

My question is this: when did the vibrato become so much more subtle? What factors may have contributed to this change in style?
