Charles Tolliver Big Band

Jimmy Owens told me that he's working with the band. They are appearing at Birdland. I'll hang at the bar, I think I can stay awake for the first set.
I will tell you about it tomorrow.

Howard Johnson is playing Baritone Sax in this ensemble.
He gave, to me anyway, the best description of a conductor's skills.
He said,"That guy could not conduct even if he were wrapped in copper wire."

have you all heard Tolliver's "Live In Tokyo" and the material recorded Live at Slugs - unbelievably great playing - very inspiring stuff, to me.

Looking forward to hearing about the gig Wilmer.

He sure did! Remember Steve Martin and the Band doing "Disco Tut" dressed like ancient Egyptians? Seeing Alan and Howard in those costumes was priceless.

We were the back-up orchestra for Josephine Baker. What a great artist! The idiot conductor was of the opinion that SHE should follow him, not the opposite. Grady Tate was the drummer on that gig.The conductor was lucky to survive that gig.

Tolliver's band is baaaaaaaaad! The whole band are capable soloists.
The rhythm section,JohnHicks, Victor Lewis and Cecil McBee, were solid as a rock. There is a young man, David Guy, who is going to be noticed after this gig. The kid has some serious chops!
They are there until Sunday, it's a worth-while visit.
