Chuck Mangione, 1972 Quartet

For those of you who only know Chuck as a POP artist, let it be known that
Chuck led a serious BEBOP Quartet during the early '70s,especially when he was a fixture at 'The Bottom Line Cabaret',NYC that featured Gerry Niewood,Joel DiBartolo and Ron Davis (Ron was later replaced by Steve Gadd)
and his band was 'tight' and rivals most bands that pre-dated his band.

The last time I checked, the 'Mercury' vinly (SRM 1 631) recording of the Quartet is out of print and I'm yet to see, hear or find a CD to replace my
vinyl and I consider this recording an essential.

By the way,Chuck's take of Mr.Hubbard's "Little Sunflower" on the flugelhorn must have left the man from Indianaopolis with a smile on his face,as he (Freddie) did after playing it with Milt Jackson.

Long Live Bop.

I have seen Chuck play on 3 occasions. His head for music never disappoints even if his playing can sometimes fall a littlle short.

As for his band mates, Gerry Niewood is one of my favorite sax players. His album off of the DMP label entitled Share my Dream gets regular play from me.

It's too bad that most people only see Chuck as the "Feels so good" guy, and not for the large volume of great music he has written and performed.

My favorite album was "Children from Sanchez." Great French horn part as well as trumpet and percussion. I was in college when the LP came out. I had it on cassette.

That Niewood fella is a MONSTER when armed with a reed in his mouth.
He captured my heart the first time I saw him in 1972 and I place him in the same multi reed class of a Jerome Richardson,Bob Wilber,Joe Farrell,Eddie Daniels and Groover Washington.

Don't pay any damn attention to the snubs who think of Chuck as a pop artist. During the '70s period, those same snubs and critics said the same thing about Herbie Mann,Lou Donaldson,George Benson, et.al when they went pop/disco and made more money over their prior and respective playing years or the 5% National Jazz fan can match.

Hell,John Coltrane never made more than $100K in any of the years he was KING of the HILL and it took an old timer (POPS) to replace The Beatles in the # 1 spot on the Billboard charts.

By the way,if you ever happen to stumble into an old timer who recorded prior to the '70s ask him/her about FIX MONEY and as Oliver Nelson coined it,be prepare to hear - "The Blues and The Abstract Truth,"

Like the man said,it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing.

hey I like "feels so good" and I think that fort made out of T.P. was da uber-coolz. I mean, it was a whole friggin' FORT man, big enough to live in! And the mega-lo-employees never found him. Buckley bit the dust and Lou-Anne lost her hair, but chuck, man, he came out of that fire with his locks and horn intact - even ran Hank outta the room operating his spit valve after.

Chuck may be the Chuck Norris of the horn.

Favorite band mate: Chuck had a keyboard player from my home town with the last name, Boddicker. His mother ran a music store and piano lessons whenever you bought a piano. Her name was Mary Lou Boddicker. I want to think his name was Mike but we also had a Major League pitcher by that name from the area.
Boddicker is a prevalent name in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa area.
Never had the opportunity to meet Mr.Boddicker as his brother GAP was the cat tickling those 88 keys and later my fellow Brooklyn native, Richard T. assumed the position.
For the '70s period,it's hard to fathom a non Buffalo/Eastman New-Yorker in Chuck's band and by the mid '70s his 'Main Squeeze" recording stablemates
included names like: Jon Faddis;Jeff Tkazyik;Lew Soloff;Alan Rubin.

My friend, those were the days.....New York,New York - it's so nice they named it twice.

Re: Chuck Mangione, 1972 Quartet

I remember Gap Mangione in the band. I am now reminded that it was not Boddicker in the band. I think it was a guitar player with the last name Harris. His father was a doctor and mother a violin player. Thank you for helping jog my memory. It was a looooonng time ago.

I think it was Pete Harris, a guitar player. Anybody know him today?
