Crossover playing

Wilmer,
I know throughout your career you have played on both spectrums of the horn (classical and commercial), what, if anything, do you recommend to someone who is considering that route? In other words, did you take a similar approach to playing the different genres? Did you use different equipment? I have been classically trained but really do enjoy playing commercial music, so I would appreciate your input.

I believe in using the same equipment for everything. I have the music going in my head before it comes out of the bell. I sing a lot. Try singing a legit piece.....now scat "Conformation" with the proper bebop inflections. You will find it easier and easier to switch gears if there is a sound picture in your head.
Be open to all kinds of music......I even find country music appealing
