Re: Dizzy's Birthday

The infectious joy that Dizzy and Louis exuded did so much to keep jazz popular.
That's one of the reasons I like groups like the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. You can tell that they're having fun and I think that there is something in all of us that wants to join in on the fun.

Re: Dizzy's Birthday

Dizzy was great. He was such a nice man. He was a great trumpet player, musician, and artist. Dizzy has a phrasing and style 100% his own, a true individual an innovator.

I remember ditching out of school to go to his memorial service at St. John, the Divine Cathedral in NYC. Wynton led a New Orleans style funeral march through the church and Slide Hampton organized an all star big band to perform. There were many musical tributes throughout the day. I will always remeber that day.

I highly love his auto biography. "To be or not to Bop". I believe it is currently out of print, but you should be able to find a copy around on Ebay or Amazon.

Happy Birthday Dizzy.

Re: Dizzy's Birthday

This was always a favorite clip of mine. i remember first seeing it on the Trumpet Kings video, hosted by Wynton, going through the history of jazz trumpet.
