Do-It- Yourself??????

When I started playing trumpet lots of things did not exist.........all these systems for playing squeaks and squeals didn't exist ...at least in Philly.
Arban, St.Jacome, Gatti, Clarke, Hering and Williams were the books in my life. My teacher stressed sight-singing. I went through each book page by page skipping nothing. By the time I reached Junior High School, I could play. My first teacher, Anthony DelCampo, had played with the Pryor band. He was not a trumpet player, but he knew his stuff about the trumpet. We NEVER worked on the upper register. We worked on playing the instrument beautifully in all registers. When I started study with Sigmund Hering in the 9th grade, I had already the ability to transpose in many keys. I could double and triple tongue.....and I was not unique in South Philly. There were several fine players in my neighborhood.

I say all that to say "Get a teacher.....if you can. You will progress in leaps and bounds"

Wilmer

My first trumpet was purchased at Albert Knecht's music store on 18th street in Philadelphia where Reinhardt had his studio. Doc Reinhardt's method was NOT a method for screamers, it was an all around system.

You said "We NEVER worked on the upper register".

Reinhardt's studies included the upper register:

"Three Vital Steps for Lip Pucker Development
by Dr. Donald S. Reinhardt
...
Carry out the ascending C arpeggio as high as possible with step one
...
A double C is possible at this point WITHOUT EVEN PIVOTING
...
As soon as you have exhausted ALL the range possibilities from steps one and two [this may or may not be at the double C area]
..."
The Pivot Method

Reinhardt's studies did include everything about trumpet playing, as you said.
It did not focus only on the upper register.

I agree with Wilmer that Reinhardt's Pivot system is an all-round system for all aspects of trumpet playing.

Rather than ignoring the upper register, it includes high-register squeaking and squealing, as I cited.
Reinhardt said that those baby squeals eventually develop into beautiful high notes.

VINTAGEBRASS is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Do-It- Yourself??????

Personally, I believe Mr. Wise was pointing out to work on the entire range, high and low, to create a beautiful sound, rather than those who want to concentrate almost exclusively on the high range notes.

Of course, I could be wrong.

Re: Do-It- Yourself??????

Most of Wilmers posts do not need additional commentary. You either get what he means, or prove that you are not ready yet.
I was also in a situation where we only talked about music. In the 9th grade I wanted to play the Telemann trumpet concerto in the worst way and needed an E above the staff. My teacher got me playing more slurs and longtones. He kept reminding me of my goal and I got that E - as well as the F, F# and G above it. It was hundreds of repetitions and a focus on the music and not the mechanics. There was no "focus" on high notes, rather on repertory that made us stretch our scope and develop talents.
