![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Dreams Fulfilled The first time I heard West Side Story I fell in love with the music. The same thing happened with the Mahler Second Symphony. My dreams will fulfilled when I got a chance to play the works. The first notes of Blumine sent me to heaven. The Philadelphia recording was the one I heard. Gil Johnson's playing was angelic. This is on my list of dream works. What's on your list? Wilmer

| Forte User | Well, my first hearing of ther Mahler 2 was with NY at Lincoln Center, and Lenny was on the box, with Phil Smith. What a memorable night that was. I can still hear Phil playing the Clarke second study while warming up on stage...smooth as glass. I'll never forget that. Then the high C...which I thought at the time was a G above the staff because it just floated there so easy sounding and relaxed. My jaw hit the floor when I saw what that was. It would have to be Mahler second for my fist choice. There are moments in that piece that just move me to tears. One other would be Mahler 8. I've never heard it live, but to be in the midst of something so huge must be an incredible feeling.

![]() | You've all hit a very soft spot for me. I was "struck" by the Mahler 2 rather late, and the more I listen to it, the more I hear just how beautiful it is. The Mahler 2 combines so many emotions and balls them into one spectacular piece (with a lot of spectacular brass playing). My feelings for the piece compelled me to fly all the way to Chicago this past summer to hear it in person at Ravinia (yes, I WILL travel for Mahler!). It was a very magical moment to be among thousands of people who would sit for 2 hours listening to Mahler and not move a muscle (or cell phone)! Whether it's hearing Chris Martin soar through the solos in person, or hearing Susan Slaughter glide over the orchestra on the CD, the piece just takes me away. I'm just waiting for the day that I'll get to perform Mahler 2, but my angst would be that I won't be able to sing, play trumpet and horn all at the same time...all the parts are so gorgeous. What an awesome piece. My second piece (as far as dreams fulfilled) is a tie between West Side Story (great book!) and Carmina Burana. The challenge of playing the WSS book just makes it thrilling, and Bernstein's orchestration/voicing is incomparable. With Carmina, I played it on trumpet and percussion before but it never occurred to me that I'd ever be able to sing it until 2 years ago when I auditioned for the symphony chorus and actually got it. I don't care much for the text, but the orchestration is incredible. There are so many other pieces I'd love to play/sing. It's always nice to have something to aim for. Liz

| Forte User | Tom Sawyer YYZ Rosanna Fool in the Rain Maybe one day I'll actually have the chops to play them. On a non-drum related note, as a trumpet player, I have always wanted to play the Telemann Concerto for 3 trumpets in Bb - the one on Wynton Marsalis' album "Baroque Music for Trumpets" I've also wanted to play in a big band that did both "Send In The Clowns" and "Time For a Change" (the Levy chart) that was featured on Stan Kenton's "76" album.

I have been listening to the recordings ALOT. I have 6 of them on my ipod playing at least an hour a day. I cant get enough of it. I just wish I could play it in a professional orchestra, a school orchestra can only do so much. Other favorites - Shosti 5, Mahler 5, Heldenleben (any strauss actually). I am jsut a sucker for huge romantic orchestral works.
