El Sistema- NYC

El Sistema Video - CBSNews.com

When I heard about this program, I thought about my upbringing in Philadelphia. When I was a kid we had similar programs.

We need to get something like this going in our country.

Check the video out, these kids do a bang up job on WSS

El Sistema NYC

Re: El Sistema- NYC

Will, thanks for posting that. I was wondering how Thomas Clamor (Berlin Philharmonic, 2nd trumpet) could get such good results from a brass ensemble who seemed to come out of nowhere...I see, that this is a result not only of his leadership, but also from the work of the El Systema

Re: El Sistema- NYC

I saw that on CBS a while back. Amazing! I agree with you 100% that we should be doing more in this country. By the way, Gustavo Dudamel will be conducting the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra November 15 at NJPAC.

I'm not a huge fan of Chavez, but can you picture the Bush administration supporting a program like this? What if we had a classical music olympics, with the kind of broad corporate and government sponsorship that the real olympics have? Just a thought.

Cheers,
Chas

Re: El Sistema- NYC

Maybe the big oil companies could contribute some of their record profits towards funding such a program. A program such as this would pay for itself in the long run by lowering the crime rate in our cities; but no, I can't imagine the current administration supporting this.

Well, what more can be said, that is a great program. It promotes positive learning, creativity and fine musicianship, all while they're having a good time. In this country, we play Grand Theft Auto and watch American Idol.

Not a bad thought,Chas.
I'm sure you remember the days starting with Dwight Eisenhower Admin. when the U.S.
State Department use to promote Jazz Concerts around the world from Aden to Zanzibar and as we grew in age,we began to hear of the fruits planted by Benny,Dizzy,et.al
began to grow.
Before his passing,I saw Max Roach pleading for funding of the arts while Jesse Helms of NC was leading a campaign to cut all funding.

I hear you, Joe! And events like the recent visit of the NY Phil to China and North Korea are encouraging. But these high-profile happenings are few and far between. I was fortunate to have played with the Brevard Festival orchestra at the White House in 1963 for one the Mrs. Kennedy's Young People's concerts, which was subsidized in large part by the state of North Carolina, under the leadership of then-Governor Terry Sanford. It was given for the benefit of disadvantaged kids in the DC area, and President Kennedy came out and personally welcomed us all and spoke eloquently about the great advantages of music education. There was a lot of hope and optimism in the American musical community then. But, I guess we must do what we can, even in our current anti-intellectual atmosphere. The sad part is that if the public were exposed to good music in the same way they're exposed to olympic sports, I'm sure they'd start to catch on and get excited. Remember the popularity of the film "The Competition,"some years ago? There's certainly as much action and drama in a music competition, both on and offstage, as in sporting events. Anyway, maybe that's a topic for another thread...

That may be true but these days most cities will fight for a chance to pay taxes to build a sports stadium just to attract, not surely get a big league football/baseball team yet top flight orchestra's like the BSO have to beg for money. That's not going to change anytime soon
