Wilmer,

What was working with the electric jazz guys like....Shorter, Clarke, Zawinul ? Were you bought in just for the sessions or was it more collaberative?

Regards,

Trevor

Joe Zawinul knows trumpet. I met Joe when he was playing with Cannonball, I was just hanging out. We talked about Wobisch and Levora, the players in the Vienna Philharmonic when Joe was growing up there."I Sing The Body Electric" was a landmark album. I played Joe's voice. I worked hard to get every inflection of his voice as he sang the music to me. I played D trumpet on a couple ensemble licks. Andrew White was the only one of the added studio guys that ad libbed.

The Stanley Clarke date is the only time I heard Faddis play piccolo trumpet. Jon absolutely nailed a D above high C. Tom Malone and Dave Taylor played in a superhuman way.
We started the dates after midnight at Electric Ladyland studios. Ah, the seventies

Must have been a buzz. That observation about Joe Zawinul brings a lot of things into context. On looking back I always thought his arrangements, particularly with Weather Report, were layered very orchestrally. I can remember in my late teens being into Weather Report, Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra and you know what? The second generation are listening as well...my son (16) actually precipitated the question when he asked whether I'd heard of the trumpeter on that WR album..he thought the trumpet sounded amazing and he's a guitarist!!!!

Regards,

Trevor
